Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Rae Corbo poured in a game-high 23 points as Norfolk State rallied in the second half to claim a 67-57 win at Coppin State on Saturday at the Physical Education Complex, breaking the Spartans' 18-game losing streak to the Eagles.
Corbo scored 15 of her points in the second half, helping NSU (10-14, 9-4 MEAC) storm back from an eight-point deficit to top the Eagles (5-19, 4-9). The victory was the Spartans' first over CSU since Jan. 31, 2005, in a game that was played at Echols Hall in Norfolk. Saturday was NSU's first win at CSU since the 2001-02 season – which was also the last season in which the Spartans notched a winning MEAC record, a feat they also clinched on Saturday.
NSU trailed 34-30 at the half and CSU doubled its lead by scoring the first two field goals of the second half to take a 38-30 edge. NSU methodically rallied thanks in part to a huge advantage on the boards (53-29) and at the free-throw line (outscoring the Eagles 26-4). NSU hit 21-of-25 from the charity stripe in the second half and 26-of-30 for the game (86.7 percent).
Koryn Lawrence and
Aivah Parham scored all the points in an 8-0 Spartan run that gave NSU its first lead of the second half. Two Lawrence free throws put NSU ahead 47-46, and Parham capped the rally with a jumper that pushed the Spartans' lead to 49-46 with 8:09 left to play.
The Spartans managed to keep CSU at arms' length the rest of the way. A steal and fast-break layup by Corbo put NSU ahead 61-53 with 2:39 remaining. The Eagles scored the next two field goals to trim their deficit to four, 61-57, with 1:45 left. But those would be the final points of the night for CSU. NSU senior guard
Jazamine Gray hit a pair of free throws and freshman forward
Kayla Roberts went 4-of-4 from the foul line to account for the final margin and final points for NSU.
Neither team led by more than five in the first half. NSU enjoyed a 28-23 edge following an 8-2 spurt that was capped by a layup by sophomore
Ronesia Spicer with 3:05 left before halftime. But the Eagles, who shot 50 percent from the floor in the first stanza, closed the half on an 11-2 run to carry a 34-30 advantage into the locker room.
NSU buckled down in the second half, holding CSU to 28.6 percent shooting and outrebounding the hosts by 13 in the second half.
The Spartans outscored CSU 26-9 in second-chance points and also enjoyed a 15-2 edge in bench scoring. Roberts tallied her seventh double-double of the season, notching 15 points and 12 rebounds. Lawrence chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds. Parham (eight points, nine rebounds) and Spicer (seven points, four rebounds) played key roles off the NSU bench.
Genesis Lucas had 14 points to lead CSU, and Janelle Lane and Amber Griffin scored 12 apiece.
Corbo shot 7-of-16 from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point range and made all six of her free throws. In the process, she became the seventh player in school history to surpass 1,500 career points. She now has 1,520 in her career and is just 65 away from becoming the school's all-time leading Division I-era scorer.
NSU has nine MEAC wins with three regular-season games left to play. Prior to this year, NSU's best MEAC record since the MEAC championship season of 2001-02 was a pair of .500 records (9-9 in 2004-05 and 8-8 last year).
The Spartans return home for the final time this year on Monday, when they host Delaware State at 4 p.m. at Echols Hall. Seniors
Ebony Brown, Parham, Gray and Corbo will also be honored Monday evening.
