Match Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
– The Norfolk State women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 7-2 victory over Christopher Newport on Sunday afternoon at the Centre Court Racquet Club.

The match, the first in nearly a month for the Spartans, also marked the first appearance for freshman Dajana Cvjetkovic. She won at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to pace NSU on the day.

"CNU is a much improved team from last year and came into this match very confident," said head coach Worth Richardson. "Our ladies stepped up and showed the fruits of their labor the last few weeks. This is a great momentum builder heading into our upcoming slate of conference matches."

Cvjetkovic won the first set tiebreaker by a 7-4 score for a 7-6 victory over McKinney Harwood at the top singles spot in the lineup. The NSU newcomer then won the second set, 6-3, for the match win. At No. 1 doubles, Cvjetkovic teamed up with sophomore Liza Gordeeva for an 8-5 win over Harwood and Kate Huck.

Gordeeva also won at No. 2 singles over Alexandra Drye via scores of 6-3 and 6-3. Senior Mafalda Lhorca and junior Andrea Macchiavello also won in both singles and doubles, including an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against Katie Carlson and Meili Konell.

Macchiavello picked up a win at No. 3 singles over Carlson, 6-0 and 6-2, and Lhorca downed Huck, 6-1 and 7-5, at the sixth spot. The Spartans' other victory came at No. 4 singles, where senior Yvonne Kamegne handed Konell a 6-0, 6-2 setback.

CNU's Logan Eldridge helped the Captains (4-1) prevent a complete sweep. Eldridge and Drye knocked off Kamegne and senior Krystal Scott at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. Scott won the first set at No. 5 singles over Eldridge, 6-3, before Eldridge stormed back to take the second set, 6-1, and the third-set tiebreaker, 11-9.

NSU (1-5) will return to the Centre Court Racquet Club to face Hampton on Tuesday at 8:45 p.m.
