CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte had to sweat through No. 5 singles, but the 49ers ultimately swept through the Norfolk State men's tennis team by a 7-0 score on Saturday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
Senior
Daniel Grauel faced Jack Williams at the fifth single slot, the most competitive match of the day. Grauel came away with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to take the first set, 7-6. Williams rebounded to win set 2, 6-4, and then the third-set tiebreaker by a 10-6 margin.
Charlotte improved to 2-1 on the season, and NSU saw its record fall to 1-6.
The match also marked the debut for a pair of freshmen in
Antonio Pejic and Fatehdeep Singh. The newcomers were slotted into the middle of the NSU lineup. Pejic dropped his No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 7-5, to Jordi Massalle Ferrer. Singh succumbed to Alex Calott by a 6-3, 6-2 score at No. 4 singles.
Senior
Shaheed Mourillon-Swift, who competed during his first two seasons at NSU, made his return on Saturday to the lineup at No. 6 singles. There, he dropped a 6-1, 6-1 contest to Paul Cisti. In the other singles matches, senior
Pascal Domnik lost to Forrest Edwards, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 position, and senior
Igor Braga suffered a 6-4, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Vikram Hundal at the second position.
Domnik and Pejic teamed up at No. 1 doubles, where they came up short by a 6-2 score to Hundal and Williams. Grauel and Singh also lost by a 6-2 score, this time to Edwards and Calott at the second position.
Ferrer and Nate Shanok swept Braga and Mourillon-Swift at the No. 3 doubles position, 6-0.
NSU takes on UNCG at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday to close out the two-day trip.
