Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Kyri Washington homered and drove in five runs and Brandon Delk went 4-for-5 to help visiting Longwood get past Norfolk State, 9-2, in the Spartans' 2015 home opener on Tuesday afternoon at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Â
In a game that was moved from Longwood to NSU's home field due to the weather forecast in central Virginia, Washington hit an RBI single in the first, a two-run homer in the third and a two-run double in the ninth for the Lancers (6-8), who never trailed.
Â
Ismael Herrera and
Angel Rosario had RBI singles in the third for NSU (3-5).
Â
Longwood struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first. After NSU starter
Josh Vales retired the first two batters of the game, the Lancers recorded four consecutive singles, the latter two being RBI hits by Washington and Travis Biddix.
Â
The Lancers doubled their lead in the third thanks to a two-out, two-run opposite field homer by Washington, making the score 4-0.
Â
The Spartans cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the third.
Denathan Dukes doubled to lead off the inning and scored from third on a two-out RBI base hit by Herrera.
Robbie Hiser, who walked earlier in the frame, scored on another two-out single, this one by Rosario, to bring NSU within 4-2.
Â
That would be all NSU could muster against Longwood pitching, and the Lancers added later insurance. Michael Osinski hit an RBI single in the eighth and a run-scoring double in the ninth, while Delk (RBI single) and Washington (two-run double) did the rest of the damage in the Lancers' four-run ninth.
Â
Mitchell Kuebbing (1-3) earned the win in relief for Longwood, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Michael Catlin. Devin Gould pitched two hitless innings, striking out two, to pick up the save.
Â
Vales (0-2) took the loss, allowing two runs and four hits in two innings.
Â
Delk finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored while Washington and Osinski went 3-for-5 for Longwood.
Â
Five different Spartans had the hits for NSU: Herrera, Rosario, Dukes,
Mikey Bruno and
Ryan Kilmon.
Â
The Spartans return to the road for their next eight scheduled games. NSU opens MEAC Northern Division play this Saturday and Sunday with a three-game series at Delaware State.
