Steve Coles notched runner-up finishes in their sprints and
Joseph Boyd did likewise in the high jump to lead a strong showing for the NSU men's track and field team on Saturday at the Virginia Cup.

The Spartans had a total of 10 top-five finishes at their outdoor season-opening meet. Carr took second in the 200 meters in a time of 21.85 seconds. Teammate
Michael-Thomas Brown was fifth in the same event (22.79) in his first meet as a Spartan.

Coles opened his outdoor season by taking second in the 400 meters in a time of 48.54 seconds. He also teamed with
Andre Pickett,
Xavier Collins and
De'Von Booker in a third-place finsh in the 4x400 relay (3:23.61).
Freshman
Allan Frye took third place in his first time running the 400 meter hurdles as a collegian, clocking a time of 55.06 seconds.Â
Sammy Kiptoo paced the distance runners with a time of 9:20.11 in the 3,000 meters, which was good for a fourth-place finish.
In the field events, Boyd cleared 6 feet, 5 inches in the high jump. That mark matched Liberty's Kyle Wheeler for the top effort of the day, but Wheeler took first place based on fewer misses.
Willard Ward cleared 13-7.25 to claim fourth place in the pole vault, and
Clifton Thompson was fifth in the discus (155-08).
NSU is back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond.
