DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central won the doubles point and five of the six singles matches on the way to a 6-1 win over the Norfolk State women's tennis team on Tuesday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
Senior
Krystal Scott picked up NSU's only win in the last match of the day at No. 6 singles. She defeated Lynsey Cover in the first set tiebreaker, 7-2, for a 7-6 victory, and followed that up with a 6-4 win in the second set.
In doubles play, senior
Mafalda Lhorca and junior
Andrea Macchiavello fell at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, against Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood. Scott and senior
Yvonne Kamegne also dropped an 8-2 contest versus Cover and Jamie Rogers at the third position.
Freshman
Dajana Cvjetkovic and sophomore
Liza Gordeeva were up by a 6-3 score at the top doubles slot against Aissa Muamba and Mia Ramic before the match was called.
Ramic needed three sets to win in singles against Kamegne at the fourth position. Kamegne won the first set, 6-4, before Ramic won the next two by 6-2 and 6-3 scores.
Nekrasova posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Macchiavello at the No. 3 positon, while Rogers earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lhorca at the fifth spot. At the top two spots, Muamba downed Cvjetkovic at No. 1 singles, 6-3 and 6-0, while Wood came away with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Gordeeva at second spot in the lineup.
Both teams moved to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in MEAC play.
"NCCU was just too good today," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "Our players fought hard, but NCCU just kept coming up with the goods time and time again. It was certainly a productive day for the ladies as we played high quality tennis against a strong team."
NSU will next play a pair of matches at Coppin State. The Spartans take on UMES on Friday and the host Eagles on Saturday.
