NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests in a 6-1 defeat of Hampton on Tuesday evening at the Centre Court Racquet Club.
NSU (3-5) won its third contest in a row, this time in a matchup that was postponed three different times since early February due to inclement weather. The victory also came two days after the Spartans upset 10-time defending MEAC champion South Carolina State.
"The ladies were able to avoid a letdown after that big win over S.C. State," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "They won some tight sets and matches against Hampton to gain valuable experience and confidence for later in the season."
The tightest match of the evening came at No. 3 singles. Junior
Andrea Macchiavello won the first set over Mikaela Pierce, 6-2, before Pierce responded with a 6-3 win in the second. In the deciding third set, Macchiavello pulled away for a 6-1 victory.
The first and second spots in the lineup also featured tight matchups. At No. 1, freshman
Dajana Cvjetkovic downed Danielle Dixon, 6-3 and 7-6(1). Then at No. 2, sophomore
Liza Gordeeva defeated Miarian Mitaishvili, 6-4, 7-5.
Senior
Yvonne Kamegne had an easy time at No. 4 singles, where she downed Melanie Scott, 6-1 and 6-0. The Spartans also got the win at the sixth position thanks to senior
Mafalda Lhorca's 8-4 triumph over Daneya Charles.
Hampton (0-2) prevented the full sweep when Anastasiia Romanova earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over senior
Krystal Scott.
Cvjetkovic and Gordeeva led the way in doubles with an 8-3 win over Dixon and Pierce at the No. 2 spot. Macchiavello and Lhorca faced a tight contest at the second position before ultimately winning by an 8-5 score over Mitaishvili and Scott.
In the third doubles slot, NSU's Scott and Kamegne triumphed over Charles and Romanova, 8-2.
The Spartans next take on Savannah State, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman from March 13-15 in the MEAC Southern Division Round-Up in Florence, S.C.
