Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Neither team could get much going offensively, but Delaware State did just enough to earn a 4-1 win over the Norfolk State softball team and a series sweep on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
NSU committed five errors on the day, leading to three unearned runs. A day after the Hornets scored 25 runs on 30 hits in a pair of wins, Spartan starter
Marissa Marrero limited DSU to just seven hits.
But in the end, DSU moved into a tie for first place with NSU in the MEAC Northern Division at 8-4 and a half game ahead of Hampton (7-4). The Hornets improved to 14-21 overall, while the Spartans dropped to 9-22.
Marrero (7-12) gave up those seven hits and four runs, one earned, with three strikeouts in seven innings. DSU starter Tara Tursellino (10-14) pitched all seven innings and allowed six hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.
The Hornets scored once in the first on an RBI single and then again in the second on a double steal on a strikeout.
Then in the third, NSU cut the deficit in half. Junior center fielder
Heather Dunning beat out a bunt down the first base line and scored all the way from first on sophomore left fielder
Devon Bitler's double to the wall in left center.
The Hornets, though, tacked on two more runs in the fifth thanks to a pair of errors on the Spartans for the final 4-1 margin.
NSU left at least one runner on base in every inning and had 11 total for the game.
Junior shortstop
Hannah Haustein had two hits, while DSU's Nicole Gazzola batted 3-for-4.
NSU will travel to Coppin State to play a three-game series this Wednesday and Thursday.
