NSU Earns 7-0 Victory Over N.C. A&T

Match Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
– Norfolk State finished with its best MEAC record in seven seasons when the Spartans women's tennis team downed North Carolina A&T by a 7-0 score on Friday afternoon at the Centre Court Racquet Club.

NSU closed out MEAC regular season play with a resounding win over the Aggies. The Spartans now stand 3-3 in the conference, 7-10 overall and in fourth place in the Southern Division standings.

North Carolina Central sits at 2-3 in the MEAC and plays N.C. A&T on Monday. With a victory over the Aggies, the Eagles would own the tiebreaker with the Spartans after defeating NSU earlier this year.

NSU won both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles fairly easily. Senior Mafalda Lhorca and junior Andrea Macchiavello defeated Kayla Jefferson and Saundra Smith by an 8-0 score at the No. 2 position, while senior Krystal Scott and sophomore Liza Gordeeva earned an 8-1 triumph over Khalia Powell and Alexus Morgan at the third spot.

At the top doubles slot, senior Yvonne Kamegne and freshman Dajana Cvjetkovic were locked in a heated contest with Nadia Hilton-Adams and Kenya Colbert. The duos were tied at 4-4 when the match was called.

The Spartans won the last three singles positions by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Kamegne downed Morgan at the No. 3 slot, while Scott earned the victory over Smith at the fifth spot. Lhorca also earned the easy win over Jefferson at the sixth place in the lineup.

Gordeeva pulled out a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Colbert at the No. 2 slot, and Cvjetkovic also won in straight sets against Hilton-Adams at the first singles position, 6-1 and 6-4. And at No. 3 singles, Macchiavello had the closest call but still won in just two sets, 6-3 and 6-4, in her matchup with Powell.

NSU's last .500 or better record in the MEAC came in 2008 when the Spartans went 3-1 in the South.

NSU will play at Old Dominion at 1 p.m. on Saturday in a non-conference contest.
