NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State swept every match but one doubles contest on the way to a 7-0 triumph for Spartan women's tennis over Chowan on Monday afternoon at Virginia Wesleyan's Everett Tennis Center.

NSU picked up its fourth win in the last five matches and saw its overall record on the year move to 8-11.

In doubles play, the Spartans won the No. 2 and 3 matchups by 8-0 scores. Senior
Mafalda Lhorca and junior
Andrea Macchiavello won at the second spot over Jessica De Backre and Straffai Cleveland, while seniors
Krystal Scott and
Yvonne Kamegne did the same at the third position against Natalia Andrade and Jennifer Humphrey.

Chowan (14-6) did defeat NSU at the top spot, as Natalya Kamenshchikova and Victoria Smolchenkova triumphed over sophomore
Liza Gordeeva and freshman
Dajana Cvjetkovic, 8-5.

Both Spartan players won in singles, though. Cvjetkovic earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kamenshchikova at the No. 1 spot, and Gordeeva downed Smolchenkova at the second slot, 7-5 and 6-2.

At the third spot in the lineup, Macchiavello took care of De Backre, 6-1 and 6-0, while Kamegne also won by that same score over Andrade at No. 4 singles. Then in the fifth spot, Lhorca swept Cleveland, 6-0 and 6-0, and Scott also won by a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Humphrey at the final singles position.

Weather permitting, NSU will host North Carolina Wesleyan on Thursday at 4 p.m. at a yet-to-be-determined location because of ongoing work on the NSU Tennis Complex.
