NORFOLK, Va. – Current members of the Norfolk State volleyball program defeated former Spartan players on Saturday afternoon by a 3-0 score in the Alumni Game at Joseph Echols Hall. It marked the last preseason scrimmage for NSU before the season begins next weekend.
The matchup, which replaced the Green vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage from the past few years, featured the 2015 volleyball team against seven former players in front of a crowd of close to 75 fans. NSU easily won the first set over the alumni, 25-8, while those former Spartans cut the margin closer in the next two sets, won by NSU by scores of 25-14 and 25-17.
Senior
Angie Darcus played a big role for NSU, tallying a match-high 10 kills with four service aces and a block. Junior
Tori Tulensru added seven kills, with senior setter
Darcy Moore posting four kills and four service aces.
Yolanda Roberts (2005-08) led the way for the alumni with nine kills and two blocks. Assistant coach
Dave Albaugh also competed for the alumni side and added four kills.
Darcus had a pair of service aces along with a block and a kill as NSU jumped ahead 7-1 to start the match. Roberts added a block and a kill for the alumni, but NSU continued to pull away. The Spartans scored eight straight at one point, inclduing three scores from sophomore
Hope Forsythe, that was part of a 13-2 run to close out the first set.
Jasmine Frazier (2010-11) tallied a kill and a block as the alumni got to within 6-4 early in the second set. NSU won five of the next six points, but then a couple of attack errors made it 11-7. Darcus, though, had three kills and three service aces during a 9-2 run. Roberts added three kills late in the set before NSU finished things off.
Errors on the Spartans helped the alumni to again get to within a 6-4 score, this time at the start of the third set. NSU won six straight points from there, and then a kill and service ace from sophomore
Clarke Tyler made it 15-6.
The alumni got back into the set thanks to a pair of kills from Roberts and a block and kill from Coralie Jarema (2012-13). Vanessa Faircloth (2006-07) also tallied a pair of kills as the alumni eventually cut the deficit to 22-17. Darcus and junior
Dominique Parker then added back-to-back kills, and Moore finished the match off with a service ace.
Forsythe and
Janay Frazier each added four kills. Forsythe also tallied a pair of service aces as NSU finished with 15 for the match.
Maatra Henderson (2009-12), Chanel Barnes (2003-06) and Angel Uy (2002-04) also competed for the alumni team.
The Spartans will begin their season next Friday in the Tribe Invitational at William & Mary.
