NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State volleyball team returns home for a pair of matches this weekend, beginning with a Homecoming and Breast Cancer Awareness matchup against Morgan State on Friday, Oct. 24. The Spartans will then face Coppin State, which remains unbeaten in MEAC play.
 
Tickets
For the first time in program history, Norfolk State is selling tickets for home volleyball matches, marking another step in the growth of Spartan Athletics.
 
Tickets cost five dollars, while NSU students receive free admission with a valid university-issued ID. Fans can purchase tickets at nsuspartantickets.universitytickets.com or by calling the NSU Ticket Office at 757-823-9009.
 
About Norfolk State
The Spartans enter the weekend with a 1-19 record, along with a 0-6 record in the MEAC, following a loss to Howard (0-3) on Friday, Oct. 17. Today marks breast cancer awareness day for the Spartans, along with homecoming.
 
Junior outside hitter Gabrielle Gilbert leads NSU with 250 kills and a .195 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Jasmine Mataira has dished out 133 assists. At the service line, Gilbert (26), Briana Ellis (16), Mya Wood (15) and Mary Nahinu (13) have provided consistent production.
 
On defense, Nahinu leads the team in digs with 167, followed by Wood with 158. Ava Berry paces the Spartans at the net with 57 blocks, while Reagan Chisholm (36), Gilbert (30), and Isis Castille (21) add support.
 
Record Watch
Gilbert ranks third in career kills at NSU with 955. She trails Jessica Johnson (2012-14, '16) in second with 1,002 kills. Charlotte Armstead (2009-12) holds the program record with 1,177. Gilbert also ranks third in career attacks with 2,547 after surpassing Yolanda Roberts (2005-08) last weekend with 2,533 career attacks.
 
About Morgan State
Morgan State enters Friday's match with an 8-9 record, along with a 5-2 record in the MEAC, following a loss against Coppin State (1-3) on Friday, Oct. 17 and a 3-0 win against Delaware State on Sunday, Oct. 19.
 
Senior outside hitter Daniela Ferreira leads the Bears with 189 kills and a team-best .257 hitting percentage. Hannah Nemeth added 141 kills, while Jada Williams added 129. Setter Isabelle Brown directs the offense with 451 assists. At the service line, Williams (48), Brown (19), and Mya Karrick (18) pace the Bears.
 
Defensively, Tameary Wardlaw leads MSU with 124 digs, followed by Hanna Nemeth (120) and Brown (108). Williams leads the Bears at the net with 25 blocks, and Aubrey Wilson follows with 30.
 
About Coppin State
Coppin State enters the weekend 13-9 on the season with a perfect 7-0 record in the MEAC, after a 3-1 win against Morgan State on Friday, Oct. 17.
 
Redshirt senior TaKenya Stafford leads the Eagles with 324 kills and a .210 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Cherisse Atilano has tallied 242 kills. Setter Andra Cintron paces CSU with 324 assists, followed by Azul Piahg (292) and Andrea Serrano (281). Coco Figueroa also shares the team lead in service aces with 27, tied with Stafford.
 
Figeroa anchors the defense with 422 digs, followed by Stafford (220) and Atilano (216). At the net, Kayden Cupid leads the Eagles with 66 blocks, while Ahzhi Coleman (33) and Stafford (31) follow.
