NSU Wraps Up North Carolina Trip with Monday Matinee at A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Norfolk State secured a solid win over North Carolina Central on Saturday, and the Spartan men's basketball team will look to make it a sweep of the North Carolina schools when they take on N.C. A&T on Monday afternoon. Tip-off from the Corbett Sports Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been moved up to 4 p.m.

Series History
Norfolk State has won the last four meetings with the Aggies to pull ahead in the all-time series, 23-20, in one of NSU's closest rivalries in the league. The teams first met in 1962-63, and in the Division I era the Spartans own an 18-14 edge in the series. NSU won the last meeting in Greensboro, 72-65 during the 2011-12 season.

About North Carolina A&T
The Aggies have lost their last six games, including the last three in conference play, to fall to 5-14 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC. On Saturday at home, the Aggies fell to Hampton, 79-62. Sam Hunt led them with 16 points and ranks second on the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game thanks in part to 111 3-point attempts. Bruce Beckford leads the team with 15.1 points and 7.6 rebounds for a team that averages 66 points per game but also gives up 77. Joshea Singleton tallies 9.4 points, with Ahmad Abdullah contribing 8.6 with a team-best 2.4 assists. Teams shoot better than 45 percent and outrebound the Aggies by an average of more than four boards per game.

Last Time Out
NSU used a 16-2 run early in the second half, part of a larger 26-9 spurt, to overcome a halftime deficit against North Carolina Central on the way to an 88-79 win over the Eagles on Saturday at NCCU's McDougald-McLendon Gym. NSU had five players in double figures for the first time in almost exactly two years, and the Spartans outscored the Eagles 52-41 in the second half for their first 50-point half of the season. Charles Oliver led the way with 20 points, thanks in part to a 5-of-8 effort from beyond the arc. He helped NSU finish 11-of-24 from beyond the arc. The Spartans shot 25-of-47 overall (53.2 percent) and 27-of-33 from the free throw line (81.8 percent). The Eagles hit 39 percent from the floor and just 7-of-25 from 3-point range. They did, however, hold a 36-30 edge on the glass, including 16-4 on the offensive side that they only turned into an 11-8 advantage over the Spartans in second-chance points.

MEAC Standings
Hampton currently leads the MEAC at 5-0 as the last undefeated team left in the league. South Carolina State sits in second at 4-1, while NSU owns sole possession of third place at 3-1. The Spartans have finished no worse than tied for third each of the last four years as well as fourth or better in eight of the last nine seasons.

Good from the Line
NSU, which ranked 282nd in the nation last year in free throw percentage, has improved its mark from 65.9 to 77.7 percent this season, which currently ranks second in the nation. The Spartans are attempting to hit better than 70 percent this year for the first time since the 2003-04 season. The school record stands at 72.3 set in 1968-69. NSU has now hit 213-of-264 (80.7 percent) over the last 12 games. In addition, the Spartans have shot 94-of-114 (82.5 percent) in the last five minutes of its games this year.

Good From Long Range
So far this year, Norfolk State is hitting 37.3 percent from beyond the arc with 137 total treys, a year after making 190 for the second-most ever in a season in program history. Former Spartan Kyle O'Quinn begins his fourth year in the NBA this season and his first with the New York Knicks after signing a four-year, $16 million contract. NSU's first NBA player in 25 years after getting drafted in the second round in 2012, O'Quinn is currently averaging 4.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game for New York after three years with the Orlando Magic.
