Scouting the SpartansThe Spartans (0-17, 0-7) cut a 19-point deficit all the way down to two, but could not get over the hump and pick up their first win, falling to South Carolina State 60-52 on Saturday night at Echols Hall. NSU outscored SCSU in three of the four quarters, but couldn't overcome a 27-7 deficit in the second period. NSU trailed by 12 to start the fourth quarter, but opened the period on a 12-2 run to cut its deficit to 45-43. But that was as close as the Spartans could get.
NSU shot just 35.8 percent from the floor, including 1-of-17 from 3-point range. NSU also missed 11 free throws, connecting on just 54 percent (13-of-24).
Kayla Roberts had 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in the loss.
Siobhan Beslow notched her eighth double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while
Dominique Harper scored a season-high 10 points off the bench. NSU trailed by as many as 19 points in the second quarter.
Beslow averages 11.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game for the Spartans, both team bests. Roberts is close behind at 10.2 and 8.0.
Scouting the TigersSavannah State (5-12, 2-4) lost its second straight game, 65-53, at Hampton on Saturday night. SSU shot just 38.5 percent from the floor and committed 16 turnovers in the game. The Lady Tigers also hit just 1-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc and shot 48 percent (12-of-25) from the free-throw line.
Kenyata Hendrix and Tiyonda Davis both scored 12 points for SSU. Jeremica Edwards had nine rebounds for SSU, but Hampton won the battle on the boards, 45-36.
Hendrix leads SSU in scoring, at 11.4 points per game. That number increases to 12.8 in MEAC games. Hendrix has attempted nearly twice as many field goals as her next closest teammate, Edwards, who averages 6.9 points per game.
SSU, the defending MEAC Tournament champion, has defeated UMES and North Carolina Central in MEAC play to go with three non-conference wins, two over non-Division I foes.
All-Time SeriesNorfolk State leads the all-time series with SSU, 5-4. But the Lady Tigers have won the last three meetings in the series, all in Savannah, Ga. Prior to SSU's three-game win streak, NSU had won three in a row in the series.
Last year, the Tigers squeaked out a 56-54 win on Jan. 26, 2015 in Savannah as NSU guard
Rae Corbo missed a potential tying jumper at the buzzer. Ezinne Kalu scored 17 points, Jasmine Norman 13 and Hendrix 10 for SSU.
Kayla Roberts led NSU with 13 points and also grabbed seven rebounds.
The teams have not played at Echols Hall since the 2011-12 season.
