George Mason Starts Fast in 60-33 Win over NSU

FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason sprinted out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back as the Patriots defeated Norfolk State 60-33 on Monday night at EagleBank Arena.

Senior guard Dominique Harper led the Spartans (1-3) with 14 points on 7-of-14 from the field. She added six rebounds, two steals and one assists. The rest of the team shot below 20 percent from the field, including 1-or-18 from behind the three point line.

All 13 GMU players that saw game action made at least one basket and scored at least two points. Kara Wright led the way for the Patriots (3-2) with eight points.

Norfolk State was able to stay within striking distance, 25-16, as the teams headed to the locker room at the half. Both teams came cold to start the second half, but GMU was able to expand its lead to 32-18 midway through the third. However, the Spartans' deficit would quickly grow from there as the Patriots used a 13-1 run to close out the quarter. The teams played to a near draw in the fourth with GMU outscoring NSU 15-14.

Senior forward Khalilah Ali recorded a game-high nine rebounds, while adding two steals and one block. Sophomore center Shayla Tanner tallied seven rebounds and three blocks for NSU, which shot 25.5 percent from the floor for the game.

Norfolk State will next travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to compete in the Christmas City Classic at Lehigh University. The tournament begins Saturday, when the Spartans will play host Lehigh in the opening game. Tip-off is 2 p.m. The tournament will conclude Sunday afternoon, with the Spartans facing either Monmouth or Hartford. Game time is either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.
