NORFOLK, Va. –Senior guard
Dominique Harper led the Spartans by registering her first career double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and the Norfolk State defense blanketed visiting Lincoln (Pa.) in a 62-28 victory on Sunday at Joseph Echols Hall.
The win improved the Spartans to 5-5 on the season, while Lincoln fell to 3-8 on the season.
The 28 points scored by Lincoln was the fifth-fewest points allowed in program history and the fewest in the school's Division I era. It was the fewest points allowed by a Spartans' team since they allowed 28 at Livingstone on Jan. 3, 1994.
Norfolk State, which led 12-8 at the end of one quarter, held the Lady Lions scoreless for 13 minutes and 54 seconds spanning late in the first quarter into the early part of the third quarter. McKenzie Spencer hit a jumper from the right elbow with 33 seconds left in the first quarter, bringing Lincoln within 12-8. The Lady Lions were outscored 19-0 in the second quarter and did not score again until the 6:39 mark of the third quarter, when She'quan Bailey hit one of two free throws. That broke a string of 23 consecutive points scored by Norfolk State.
Still, the Lady Lions managed just two free throws in the third quarter. They were 0-of-10 from the floor in the second and 0-for-10 in the third quarter as well and trailed 45-10 entering the final period.
NSU held Lincoln without a field goal for 22:16, stretching from Spencer's jumper in the first quarter until Jaeda Davis' layup with 8:17 left in the game. The Spartans' lead grew to as much as 42 points when junior forward
Kayla Roberts made 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to make the score 56-14 with 4:50 left in the game. Norfolk State cruised to its fourth victory of at least 24 points this season.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first. The Spartans shot 26 percent (5-of-19), while Lincoln shot 17 percent (4-of-23). The Lady Lions only lead was at 4-2 midway through the first period.
Junior center
Shayla Tanner tied her career high with 10 points. She added seven rebounds and two steals. Senior guard
Jordan Strode scored nine points and had a team high four-assists, which ties a career high. Roberts recorded her six double-digit rebound game with 10, including five offensive. She also had three assists and three steals.
Sophomore guard
Alexys Long notched a career-high seven rebounds to go with seven points. Senior forward
Khalilah Ali chipped in with eight rebounds and four blocks. Harper added three assists, three steals and two blocks. Freshman forward
De'Janaire Deas swatted away three shot attempts.
Norfolk State outrebounded Lincoln 53-36 and registered a season-high 12 blocks and 12 steals. The 12 blocks is the second-highest in school history, and the most since NSU blocked 16 against Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 5, 2007. The Spartans held the Lady Lions to 19 percent (11-of-58) from the field, the worst by an NSU opponent this season.
Davis led the Lady Lions with 10 points.
The Spartans will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on UNC-Greensboro Wednesday night. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
