Howell Ties for Top MEAC Field Athlete Honor at Conference Indoor Championship

Meet Results

LANDOVER, Md. – Senior Kiara Howell earned MEAC Indoor Championship Co-Most Outstanding Field Athlete honors on Saturday as the Spartan women's track and field team capped its indoor season at the 2016 conference championship at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

Howell placed second on Saturday in the shot put with a season-best throw of 44 feet, 0.75 inches. That, coupled with her second-place finish on Friday in the weight throw, helped her amass 16 points toward the Spartans' team total. That point total tied North Carolina Central jumper Zoe Ellis as the most by any field athlete in the meet.

This is the first time Howell has earned the top field athlete award at a MEAC indoor championship meet. She has either tied or won outright the top field performer award at all three of the MEAC Outdoor Championship meets she has competed in thus far in her career.

Howell's effort in the shot put was the highlight for the Spartans on Saturday. Freshman Taejah Robertson scored in her first MEAC indoor meet at NSU, placing sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.72 seconds.

The Spartans finished ninth in the team standings with 23 total points. Hampton won its sixth consecutive MEAC indoor title with 143.33 points.

The Spartans have a month off before opening outdoor season at the University of Virginia in mid-March.
