NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season late Sunday morning with a 9-0 win over Christopher Newport at the outdoor Eyre Tennis Courts on the CNU campus.

The Spartans won in straight sets in all six singles matches and also swept doubles to improve to 1-3 on the season. CNU did lose two of the three doubles matches by 8-5 scores, but in the end the Captains fell to 5-1 overall this year.

Two of NSU's best wins in singles came at the No. 2 and 3 singles positions. At the second slot, freshman
Marta Gomar downed Meili Konell by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Junior
Liza Gordeeva won at No. 3 singles over Claire Dockrill by reverse scores, 6-1 and 6-2.

The first singles match to come to a close involved senior
Andrea Macchiavello at the No. 4 spot. She earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alexandra Drye. Macchiavello's doubles partner, senior
Mafalda Lhorca, topped Isabelle Wessel, 6-3 and 6-3, at the sixth spot in the lineup.

Macchiavello and Lhorca were victorious at the second doubles spot, 8-5, over Dockrill and Katie Carlson. Gordeeva and junior
Ana Popovic also garnered an 8-5 win in doubles, topping Wessel and Kate Huck at the third position.

Gomar and sophomore
Dajana Cvjetkovic had an easier time in the No. 1 spot, defeating Drye and Emily Morgan by an 8-2 margin.

In the other two singles matches, Cvjetkovic downed Carlson by scores of 6-1 and 6-4 at the No. 1 slot, while Popovic took care of Morgan at the No. 5 position, 6-2 and 7-5, in the closing match of the day.

NSU will host James Madison next Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup at the indoor Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center at ODU, the first match of an unofficial doubleheader that will be followed by the Spartan men against Bucknell.
