Live StatsNORFOLK, Va. – Coming off its first win of the season, the Norfolk State women's basketball team tries to make it two in a row as it caps its three-game road swing Monday night at Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. at Hytche Athletic Center.
Scouting the Spartans: NSU (1-19 overall, 1-9 MEAC) broke a 20-game losing streak dating to last year's MEAC tournament quarterfinals, pulling out a dramatic 110-108, double-overtime win at Howard on Saturday.
Kiara Phillips scored a career-high 21 points to lead six Spartans in double figures.
Yazmen Hannah scored a career-high 20, including the game-tying three at the end of regulation that sent the game into overtime.Â
Koryn Lawrence scored 16 points,
Siobhan Beslow had 15 points and 19 rebounds,
Brehanna Daniels scored 11 points and
Kayla Roberts had 10. The Spartans shot 47 percent from the floor and made a season-high 12 3-pointers, one shy of the school record.
Scouting the Hawks: UMES fell to 6-15 overall, 4-5 in the MEAC after a 76-55 home loss to Hampton on Saturday. The Hawks shot just 34 percent from the floor and committed 17 turnovers in the loss. Ciani Byrom scored 18 points to pace UMES and Ra'Jean Martin added 12. Hampton connected on 50 percent from the floor against UMES, getting 31 points from Malia Tate-DeFreitas and 21 from K'lynn Willis.
The Hawks have won three of their last five in what has been an up-and-down season. Moengaroa Subritzky leads UMES in scoring at 11 points per game and Byrom chips in 9.8. The Hawks average just 56 points per game, but are fourth in the MEAC in 3-pointers made (102).
All-Time Series: NSU leads the all-time series with UMES, 23-16. But the Hawks have won the last three meetings between the teams, including a 69-64 overtime victory in the MEAC tournament semifinals last March that sent UMES into the championship round. The Spartans' last win over UMES came in the 2013-14 season, when NSU swept the regular-season series before falling to the Hawks in the first round of the 2014 MEAC tournament.
Breaking Out: With a win Saturday, the Spartans shook off what was approaching an historic start to the year. The 2008-09 team went 0-22 to start the year, the worst start to a season in program history. The win also leaves Air Force (0-22) as the last team in NCAA Division I women's basketball without a victory this year.
This and That: Some notes and trends for the Spartan women:
- The 110 points NSU scored Saturday are its most ever against a Division I team and second-most vs. any opponent in the Spartans' D-I history. NSU scored 116 in a win over Virginia-Lynchburg on Dec. 20, 2013.
- NSU hit a season-high 12 3-pointers at Howard, one shy of the program record of 13 against S.C. State on Jan. 8, 2005.Â
- NSU's previous season high in 3-pointers made was five, done twice this year.
- The 218 total points are the most scored in a MEAC women's game since at least 2002-03.

Kiara Phillips (21 points),
