Box Score PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Koryn Lawrence poured in a season-high 21 points to lead Norfolk State to its second consecutive win, a 74-63 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore at the Hytche Center on Monday night.
Lawrence hit 8-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals for NSU (2-19, 2-9 MEAC), while
Kiara Phillips added 12 points and
Dominique Harper 11.
The Spartans showed no ill effects from their draining double-overtime win at Howard on Saturday. Lawrence and Phillips had nine points each and
Alexys Long added eight in the first half. Lawrence had five points in a 10-2 Spartan run late in the second quarter, which was capped by a 3-pointer from Long, that gave NSU a 36-25 lead. The Hawks, however, scored the final eight points of the period to draw within 36-33 at halftime.
UMES took its first and only lead of the second half, 43-41, on two Moengaroa Subritzky free throws with 4:50 left in the third quarter. But
Kayla Roberts and Harper scored back-to-back baskets to start an 11-1 NSU run, which also include a three-point play by Lawrence.
NSU, which led 52-46 entering the fourth quarter, maintained a lead of at least four points the entire final period before pulling away. UMES' Ciani Byrom hit a 3-pointer to cut her team's deficit to 59-55 with 5:22 left. Roberts followed with a free throw, then Phillips found Lawrence and Harper for field goals on consecutive Spartan possessions to push the lead to nine, 64-55.Â
The Spartans sealed it at the line, making 6-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final 1:07. In all, the Spartans hit 7-of-12 (58 percent) from the floor and 8-of-12 (67 percent) from the line while committing just three turnovers in the final period.
NSU finished the night with just 12 turnovers, matching its season low from a Jan. 9 game with Florida A&M. UMES managed just 10 points off NSU miscues. The Spartans, in turn, forced 22 UMES turnovers and converted those into 25 points. The Spartans also outshot UMES from the floor, 42 percent to 37.
Phillips added five rebounds, four assists and three steals for NSU in her second straight start. Roberts chipped in with nine points, eight boards and two blocks off the bench. Long and
Siobhan Beslow scored eight points apiece.
Byrom led UMES with 22 points and Subritzky added 11.
The Spartans return home for a 4 p.m. matchup Saturday with Morgan State on Alumni Day.
