DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Freshman
Marta Gomar won both of her matches on Sunday morning during the Norfolk State women's tennis team's 5-2 loss to Bethune-Cookman at City Island Courts.
Â
The Spartans wrapped up their spring break trip with a contest against MEAC Southern Division opponent B-CU. Gomar won in both singles and doubles, while senior
Andrea Macchiavello also won in singles.
Â
"Unfortunately the ladies fought hard but came up short today," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "We lost a tough doubles point and some close singles matches. Hopefully, we can take some confidence away from this and apply it to our divisional play."
Â
Gomar handily won at No. 3 singles over Hilary Hanton, 6-1 and 6-0. She also teamed up with junior
Liza Gordeeva at the third doubles position to top Hanton and Karen Romero, 6-2.
Â
Macchiavello, meanwhile, topped Ancia Ifill at the fourth singles slot, 6-4 and 7-5.
Â
Ifill and Alejandra Vidal had been coming off a narrow 7-5 win over Macchiavello and senior
Mafalda Lhorca at the second doubles spot. Mina Matsuba and Matea Roki helped the Wildcats secure the doubles point by topping junior
Ana Popovic and sophomore
Dajana Cvjetkovic, 6-1, at the No. 1 position.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (7-9) earned wins at the top two and bottom two singles slots as well. Popovic came closest to claiming a victory in those matches for NSU (2-8). She won the first set at No. 5 singles over Romero, 6-4, before Romero claimed the next two, 6-3 and 6-4.
Â
Vidal topped Lhorca at the sixth position, 7-5 and 6-4. Then at the top two spots, Matsuba defeated Cvjetkovic by a 6-2, 7-5 margin at the No. 1 slot, while Roki downed Gordeeva by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 at the second position.
Â
NSU will begin MEAC Northern Division play on Thursday when the Spartans host UMES at 2 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Complex.
