HAMPTON, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team won a pair of three-set singles matches on the way to a 6-1 conference win over Hampton on Wednesday afternoon at Neilson-Screen Stadium.

The Spartans won two of three doubles matches and five of the six singles matchups to remain perfect in conference play. NSU ran its MEAC record to 3-0 as well as its overall mark to 5-9. The loss kept Hampton winless at 0-10 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

NSU pulled out wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles for the early lead in the match. At the second spot, seniors
Andrea Macchiavello and
Mafalda Lhorca downed Julia D'Auvergne and Cherise Slocombe by a 6-2 margin. At the third position, junior
Liza Gordeeva and freshman
Marta Gomar also won by a 6-2 score, defeating the Hampton duo of Daneya Charles and Anastasiia Romanova.

Hampton kept NSU from sweeping doubles by winning the first position. Mariam Mitaishvii and Mikaela Pierce posted a 6-2 win over NSU junior

Popovic and Cvjetkovic made up for the loss by winning their singles matches in three sets. Cvjetkovic took down Mitaishvii at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, winning the first and third sets, 6-2 and 6-2, while dropping the second set, 6-3.

Popovic, meanwhile, lost the first set at No. 5 singles to Steffy Paez by a 6-4 margin before rallying to win the next two sets, 6-1 and 7-5.

Gomar posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Pierce at the third spot, while Macchiavello took care of D'Auvergne at the fourth slot, 6-1 and 6-2. Lhorca gave NSU one more singles victory at the sixth position, where she posted a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Romanova.

Slocombe prevented a complete Spartan sweep of the match by winning at No. 2 singles. Gordeeva won the first by a 6-4 score before Slocombe came back to win the next two, 6-2 and 7-5.

NSU will play at Howard at 1 p.m. on Friday in another conference matchup.
