Radford Shuts Out NSU Twice, 8-0 and 3-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Radford limited the Norfolk State softball team to eight hits on the day in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Spartans on Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.

The Highlanders took the first game 8-0 in six innings before grinding out a 3-0 victory in the second contest.

Abby Morrow (6-5) pitched all six innings of game 1, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and zero walks. Kayla Huffman (3-0) pitched six innings in game 2, giving up five hits while striking out six.

Marissa Gagliano batted 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for the Highlanders in the first contest, while Nia Chiles went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a solo homer. Whitney Davis' two-run homer for Radford in game 2 spelled the difference in the end.

Freshman shortstop Stephanie Davenport had three of the team's eight hits on the day, including two in game 2. The loss dropped the Spartans to 2-6 overall, while Radford improved to 11-5.

In the first contest, Radford got on the board with an RBI bloop single in the top of the first inning. Chiles' solo homer in the third made it 2-0, and Radford tacked on another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to deep center field.

The Highlanders added two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to finish the six-inning victory.

In game 2, Davis belted a two-run homer to left field to get the Highlanders going in the second inning. Radford threatened in the fourth inning, putting runners on second and third with one out. Sophomore starter Megan Przeslawski, though, got Davis to pop up and Alex Lang to strikeout to keep it at 2-0.

Summer Robinson made it 3-0 with an RBI double in the fifth for what ended up being the final scoring margin. The Spartans threatened in the bottom of the frame, but Przeslawski's hit down the left field line with a runner on second fell just into foul territory. Then in the sixth, NSU put runners on second and third with one out but still could not push a run across.

The Spartans did the same in the seventh, getting back-to-back hits by freshman Kylee Lopez and Davenport, and a throwing error on the play at first on the latter, to again put two runners in scoring position.

Radford reliever Lauren McIntyre got two quick outs on a flyout and groundout and then one more groundout to keep the shutout intact.

Przeslawski (1-2) pitched all seven innings of the second game, allowing seven hits and three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts.

NSU will play at Liberty on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the first of five games at the Liberty Softball Classic.
