LAUREL, Md. – The No. 20 Norfolk State bowling team went 5-0 on the first day of competition and ended the weekend with an 8-4 overall record at the three-day Lady Bulldog Classic hosted by Bowie State at the AMF Laurel Lanes.

The Spartans got off to a hot start on Friday in Baker play, going undefeated to lead the way in total pinfall. NSU struggled on day two in traditional play, posting a 2-3 record. The Spartans then won their first match on Sunday in the bracket round before falling in their second and final match of the day.

NSU totaled 4,560 pins on Friday, nearly 80 more than the next closest team. The Spartans won five straight, including their closest win in the last match of the day. It all began, though, with a 913-855 victory over Howard, which was followed by a 961-923 triumph over host Bowie State.

The Spartans next defeated Fayetteville State, 980-919, and Virginia State, 870-709. In the last match on Friday, Norfolk State topped fellow MEAC school Morgan State, 836-810.

Morgan State, though, got some revenge in the first match on Saturday during traditional play. The Bears topped NSU, 929-892, although the Spartans won the next two. They downed Virginia State, 948-827, and Fayetteville State, 813-778.

But from there, NSU lost its last two matches on Saturday to finish third among the six teams in terms of total pinfall for the day. Bowie State knocked off NSU by a score of 822-800, and Howard pulled out an 896-759 victory as the Bison went 5-0 and led all teams in total pinfall that day.

Junior Briana Gardner posted a 180.6 average in all five games to lead the way for the Spartans on Saturday. Freshman Heizel Quinones competed in two games and averaged 185.5, while both sophomore Alexa Rodriguez and freshman Aubrey Conrad competed in all five games as well. Conrad finished with a 174.4 average, just ahead of Rodriguez' mark of 174.0.

Howard and Morgan State had byes on Sunday in the first round of bracket play. NSU took on Virginia State in a best-of-seven series, and the Spartans won their first two games for the early lead. The Trojans won the third and fifth games by a combined five pins to make it 3-2, but the Spartans finished the match with a 190-151 win in the sixth game.

NSU drew Morgan State in the next round and won the first game before the Bears posted scores of 224 and 235 on the way to winning each of the last four games for a 4-1 overall victory. Morgan State went on to defeat Howard 4-2 in the championship match.
