Series History
NSU is 2-3 all-time against UNCG in a series that dates back to the 1990-91 season. Norfolk State won the first two meetings, but UNCG has taken the past three games, including a 59-52 win last season.
Norfolk State led 42-35 at the end of the third quarter, but UNCG out-scored NSU 24-10 in the final period, including an 11-4 run that put UNCG up 52-50 with 2:32 to go. NSU was down only three points with 19 seconds left in the game, but Te'ja Twitty iced the game away with four-straight makes at the free-throw line.
Nadine Soliman led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting. As a team, UNCG shot 42.3 percent from the field, but committed 21 turnovers. NSU managed 34.4 percent shooting and was led by
Kayla Roberts' 15 points and six rebounds.
The Opening Tip
Norfolk State rode a red-hot offense to victory over Towson on Tuesday night. NSU set numerous season highs in the 86-76 victory, including points, field goals (31), shooting percentage (48.4), 3-point field-goal percentage (57.1) and assists (21). The Spartans' 21 assists are tied for the 10th-most in program history and are the third-most in the
Larry Vickers era.
The return of
Gabrielle Swinson brought new life to Norfolk State, as the senior guard scored 18 points, grabbed six boards and dished out six assists. Swinson and
Raven Russell combined for 13 of NSU's 21 assists. The duo proved lethal in the open court as well as they scored 18 fastbreak points and assisted on five fastbreak baskets. NSU's 23 fastbreak points were the most this season, blowing away the previous high of six set in the Spartans' season debut at VCU.
Norfolk State regained its bearings from beyond the 3-point line, making eight of its 14 attempts for 57.1 percent. That performance marked the first time the Spartans eclipsed 50 percent from the bonusphere since they went 12-of-24 against Howard on Feb. 6, 2016 in Vickers' first victory as then-interim head coach.
Five Spartans tallied double-digit points on Tuesday, led by Russell's 21 points -- a NSU season-high. Joining Russell were Swinson (18), Roberts (12),
Alexys Long (10) and
Kendrea Dawkins (10). Dawkins 10 points served as her season high.
Towson shot only 36.1 percent in the game but used rebounding and free throws to stay in the game. The Tigers owned a 19-12 edge in offensive rebounds and out-rebounded NSU 45-39. In addition, Towson made 86.4 percent (19-22) of its free throws while the Spartans went 12-27 (52.9) from the charity stripe. Two Tigers, Nukiya Mayo and Raine Bankston, had perfect nights from the line with Mayo going 8-for-8 on free throws as part of a team-high 20 points.

The Spartans average 64.1 points per game on 41 percent shooting. What they lack from 3-point range (4.2 treys per game, 25.5 percent) they make up for at the free throw line (12.3 free throws per game, 71.9 percent).
