Norfolk State Women's Basketball
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team (12-9, 7-2) will look to complete a season sweep of Savannah State when it travels to Tiger Arena on Monday night at 6 p.m.
About NSU: The Spartans have won seven of their last 10 games and have matched their best start in 20 MEAC seasons with seven wins through the first nine conference games, which came during the 1999-2000 campaign.
Norfolk State won its second consecutive game by double-digits. After defeating the defending MEAC champion North Carolina A&T State Aggies 69-53 last Monday night at Echols Hall, the Spartans replicated the performance with a 68-53 victory at South Carolina State on Saturday.
Jordan Strode followed up her 21-point performance against North Carolina A&T with 18 points against the Lady Bulldogs.
Kayla Roberts added 12 points and seven rebounds in the win at South Carolina State.
The Spartans had nine of their 11 players record at least two points, while 10 of 11 grabbed at least two rebounds and seven had at least one assist. As a team, Norfolk State assisted on 18 of its 26 made buckets, while the Lady Bulldogs notched eight assists on 19 made baskets.
The Spartans shot 26-of-62 (41.9 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from 3-point land, while holding the South Carolina State to 19-of-57 (33.3 percent) from the floor and 3-of-14 (21.4) from deep.
About Savannah State: Savannah State opened MEAC play with three consecutive losses. Since starting 0-3 in conference play, the Tigers have won six of their last seven games, including a 55-51 over Hampton on Saturday at Tiger Arena. Hampton came into the game with one loss and sitting atop the conference standings.
Tiyonda Davis recorded her fourth consecutive double-double with a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds in the victory. Davis also added a career-high eight blocks, while Lauren Moss added 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the floor with five rebounds.
Moss is averaging 11.1 points and 3.5 rebounds this season, while Kenyata Hendrix adds 11 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Davis averages 9.1 rebounds per game.
All-Time Series vs. Savannah State: The two schools have met 11 times on the hardwood, with Norfolk State coming out victorious six times, including a 61-55 victory over the Lady Tigers on Jan. 11. The Spartans won five of the first six matchups and Savannah State had won four in a row prior to the last meeting.
Last Meeting vs. Savannah State: Norfolk State led 51-35 heading into the fourth quarter, before the Lady Tigers outscored Norfolk State 18-3 in the first 5:43 of the fourth quarter to cut the Spartans lead to 56-53 with 4:17 left. Norfolk State's defense stiffened and limited to Savannah State two free throws the rest of the way. The Lady Tigers went 0-of-5 from the floor, including 0-of-4 from 3-point range, and committed two turnovers in the final four minutes of the game as the Spartans held on.
Dominique Harper tallied 16 points, while
Jordan Strode added 13 points.
Kayla Roberts grabbed 11 rebounds and added four points to go along with her five blocks.
Khalilah Ali notched the other two Norfolk State blocks and dropped in seven points.
Kiara Phillips totaled nine points, while her three assists and two steals led the Spartans.
