NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State women's basketball player
Amber Brown will receive the Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award this summer presented by the N4A, the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics.
Brown, who will graduate this spring with a degree in psychology, competed on the NSU basketball team for two and a half seasons before being hospitalized following complications from a diabetes-related stroke and three cardiac arrests in January of 2016. Following her recovery, she returned to Norfolk State to continue her school work, a process that will allow her to still receive her diploma in four years.
Following her graduation this spring, Brown plans on pursuing a master's degree in criminal justice from Norfolk State. She also wants to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and eventually become a forensic psychologist.
Brown will receive her award on Saturday, June 10 during the N4A's awards luncheon at its national convention in Orlando. Last year the N4A honored five student-athletes from across the country with the award.
The N4A Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award is intended to honor student-athletes who have overcome great personal, academic, and/or emotional odds to achieve academic success while participating in intercollegiate athletics. These young men and women may not be the best athletes or students, and therefore may not be recognized by other organizations or awards. Nonetheless, they have persevered and made significant personal strides toward success. These are the students who benefit most from academic athletic advisement programs.
N4A, which has been in existence since 1975, is a diverse educational service and professional non-profit organization. Membership of N4A includes academic support and student services personnel who are committed to enhancing opportunities for academic, athletics and personal success for student-athletes.
