NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team takes to the road for the first time in conference play this season when the Spartans play a three-game set at Maryland Eastern Shore this Saturday and Sunday. The teams play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and a single game Sunday which begins at noon at Hawk Stadium.
The Spartans (6-12, 1-2 MEAC North) have split their last four games but are coming off a 10-8, 10-inning win at Richmond on Wednesday.
Brian Beard hit the game-winning two-run triple with two outs in the top of the 10
th in that one, part of a three-hit, three-RBI day for the senior outfielder.
Michael Parmentier (1-1) allowed one unearned run in four innings to get the win in relief for the Spartans.
Alex Mauricio (team-best .308 average, 8 doubles) and
Adam Collins contributed two hits apiece.
The Spartans will turn to their usual rotation of
Alex Mauricio (1-2, 3.47),
Jonathan Mauricio (0-2, 3.60) and
Devin Hemmerich (3-2, 2.61) on the mound.
Alex Mauricio pitched 6.1 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in a no-decision against DSU last weekend. Hemmerich has pitched two straight complete games, allowing a total of five hits and one run and 17 strikeouts in his last two appearances.
The Spartans will be trying to climb the ladder in the early-season standings in the MEAC North. Delaware State – which beat NSU two of three last weekend – and Coppin State, winners of two of three against MDES, are tied for first in the division in the early going.
The Hawks (3-14, 1-2) have lost four straight games following their first MEAC win of the season, a 6-3 triumph over Coppin State last Sunday. MDES suffered mid-week losses of 10-3 at Duke on Tuesday and 6-0 at North Carolina Central on Wednesday.
In the win over Coppin last Sunday, Wesley Martin (2-0, 3.48) allowed three runs over seven innings. He also has a win over Iona to his credit this season. Jamison Trower is bating a team-best .356 with a home run and 13 RBI this season.
