HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team fell to James Madison 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Hillside Courts on the campus of James Madison, dropping the Spartans to 0-4 this season.
Norfolk State's
Flavian Fernandez and the Dukes' Theophile Lanthiez engaged in an epic battle at the No. 4 position, with the third-set tie-breaker lasting 30 points. Fernandez dropped the first set 6-7, before evening the match at one set apiece with a 6-0 second-set victory. He outlasted Lanthiez 16-14 in the third set, securing the Spartans' only point of the afternoon and improving his season record to 2-2, with all four matches being at the No. 4 position.
The Dukes (9-6) swept all three doubles matches. James Madison's top duo of Lanthiez and Paul Mendoza defeated the Spartans'
Andres Alcaraz and
Vini Da Silva 6-1, while Miljan Ruzic and August Simonsen clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position over Norfolk State newcomers
Agustin Carrizo and
Ignacio Guevel. The pair of Damon Roberts and Sebastian Salinas registered a 6-2 victory over Norfolk State's Fernandez and
Dan Dumitrascu at the No. 2 position
In singles action, Alcaraz forced a third-set tie-breaker against Salinas at the No. 1 position. Alcaraz dropped the first 6-2, before taking the second set 6-4. Salinas claimed the point with a 7-5 victory in the final set. At the No. 2 position, Dumitrascu fell to Roberts 6-2, 6-2, while Mendoza defeated Da Silva 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 position.
Ruzic secured the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Guevel at the No. 6 position. Tate Steinour defeated Carrizo 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 5 position.
The Norfolk State men will conclude their road trip at Richmond on Sunday at 3 p.m.
