BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team clinched the second seed from the MEAC Northern Division in the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tennis Championship with a 7-0 victory at Coppin State on Sunday afternoon.
The match ended a two-day, two-match trip to Baltimore for NSU. The Spartans fell 5-2 on Saturday to first-place Morgan State.
Norfolk State's
Andres Alcaraz and
Vini Da Silva won their singles and doubles matches without losing a single game, while the Spartans' (3-8, 3-1 MEAC North) registered victories in eight of the nine matches in all against Coppin State (1-14, 0-5).
The Spartans' top duo of Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu defeated the Eagles' Zaipo Oula and Andres Diaz 6-0, while Norfolk State's team of Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel secured the doubles point with a 6-0 victory over Andre Sturniolo and Gavin Lewis at the No. 3 position. The Spartans'
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo fell to Coppin State's Christian Duchnak and Gabriel Franca by a score of 6-4 at the No. 2 position.
Alcaraz and Da Silva each cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories over Franca and Oula at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles positions, respectively. Dumitrascu defeated Lewis 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position, while Fernandez recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over Duchnak at the No.4. Carrizo triumphed over Diaz 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 position and Guevel completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sturniolo at the No. 6.
Morgan State 5, Norfolk State 2
In doubles action Saturday, Morgan State took the top two pairs, while the Spartans' No. 3 duo of Da Silva and Guevel defeated Arjun Ramakrishnan and Sagar Sathyanarayanan 6-4, registering the only doubles victory for Norfolk State. Morgan State's top duo of Ondrej Labik and Nihit Rawal outlasted Alcaraz and Dumitrascu 7-6, while Lucas Krusinski and Jeremy Field claimed a 6-3 victory over Fernandez and Carrizo at the No. 2 position.
Alcaraz earned a 7-5, 6-2 straight-set victory over Krusinki at the top singles position, but Morgan State claimed straight-set wins at the Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 positions.
Field defeated Da Silva 6-1, 7-6 at the No. 2 position, while Ramakrishnan cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Dumitrascu at the No. 3. Labik registered a 6-3, 7-6 win over Fernandez at the No. 4 position and Rawal defeated Carrizo 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5.
Guevel earned the Spartans' second singles point with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory over Sathyanarayanan at the No. 6 position.
Norfolk State's first-round MEAC Championship opponent and match time will be announced early this week by the conference. The tournament runs Thursday through Saturday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center at Old Dominion University across town in Norfolk.
