Series History
Of all of the teams NSU has played over the years, Elizabeth City State has the third-most wins against the Spartans. Still, NSU leads the all-time series over ECSU, 66-37. The two former CIAA rivals played last year, a 91-55 win for the Spartans at Joseph Echols Hall on Nov. 15, 2016. The programs first met in 1953-54, the first official season of basketball for Norfolk State. They met at least twice per season from 1953-54 all the way through 1996-97. This will mark just the third meeting between the two teams since the Spartans moved up to Division I in 1997-98.
Norfolk State has won six in a row over North Carolina A&T, with the last win by the Aggies coming by an 89-81 margin in overtime during the 2010-11 season. That has pushed NSU's record to 25-20 all-time against A&T, the second-closest rivalry for NSU among all teams in the MEAC. Last year the Spartans won 83-69 at home on Jan. 30, 2017 as five players scored in double figures for Norfolk State.
Scouting Elizabeth City State
The Vikings sit 5-6 on the year after falling on Saturday against Chowan at home, 64-60. John Maynor and Zaccheus Hobbs lead the way on offense, with Maynor tallying 15.2 points per game and Hobbs right behind him at 11.9. Corey Mendez is third on the team at 9.5 points for a Vikings squad that average 72 per game. They only shoot 28 percent from 3-point range while allowing teams to hit nearly 36 percent from deep as well as 47 percent overall. The Vikings do win the turnover battle pretty easily, +3.7 each time out. Opponents give it away on average 16.2 times per game, with ECSU tallying almost nine steals. Shyheid Petteway (8.3 points) is another name to look out for.
Scouting North Carolina A&T
The Aggies stand 9-8 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC heading into their game on Monday at home against Coppin State. The Aggies and North Carolina Central (also 9-8) stand as the only teams in the MEAC above .500 overall. A&T picked up five wins over D-I non-conference teams this year, thanks in part to Femi Olujobi. Shooting nearly 56 percent overall, he is averaging 20.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game after arriving from D-I Oakland University. Devonte Boykins is the next closest scorer on the team at 9.6. As a team, the Aggies score 75.2 points per game despite hitting just 29 percent from 3-point range. They hit 74 percent from the free throw line and 47 percent overall, although the opposition connects from 46 percent from the field. Aaron Edmead (8.2 points) and Japhet Kadji (7.7 points, 5.7 rebounds) also make contributions on the offensive end.
Last Time Out
Down by 10 in the second half, North Carolina Central eventually went on a 15-2 run right near the end of the game to pull out a 64-63 win over Norfolk State on Monday at NCCU's McDougald-McLendon Arena. NSU led 58-49 with a little more than seven minutes remaining. But during that run by the Eagles, Norfolk State turned it over four times and shot 0-of-10 from the field.
Derrik Jamerson Jr. made 5-of-8 from 3-point range for a 15-point night, while
Kyle Williams also reached double figures with 11 points and nine rebounds. NCCU, which led by four at halftime, got 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting from Raasean Davis. The Eagles had 20 free throw attempts in the second half and 25 for the game, compared to just 12 for NSU. The Spartans did hold the rebounding edge, 40-35, while making 8-of-25 from 3-point range.
