NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State's
Vini Da Silva claimed his second tournament victory of the fall after running the table over the weekend at the Virginia Beach Clay Court Championships at the Cape Henry Racket Club.
After receiving a bye into the round of 16, Da Silva marched to the championship with four straight-sets victories.
In the semifinals, Da Silva bested his teammate,
Ignacio Guevel, 4-1, 4-2 to set up a meeting with yet another Spartan in
Dan Dumitrascu.
Da Silva and Dumitrascu split the first eight games of the first set to force a tie-breaker, which Da Silva won 8-6. The second set proved much easier for Da Silva, who won 4-1 to take the championship bout 5-4 (8), 4-1.
Dumitrascu likewise received a first-round bye before dispatching Robert Wagner, 4-1, 4-0 in the second round. He then advanced to the semifinals with a 4-2, 4-2 win over Bucknell's Andrei Vituic.
In the second part of an all-Spartan semifinals, Dumitrascu bested
Flavian Fernandez 4-1, 4-2.
Guevel blanked Bucknell's Max McDonald, 4-0, 4-0, in his first match of the bracket to reach the quarterfinals, where he again cruised to a 4-0, 4-0 win before falling to Da Silva in the semifinals.
Fernandez started his run to the semifinals with a 4-0, 4-0 win over Hampton's Basil Post. He then swept Alex Pedrazzini of Bucknell, 4-1, 4-2.
In the doubles bracket, the tandem of Da Silva and Guevel reached the finals before falling by a razor-thin margin in the tie-breaking set.
Against Palmer Edema and Julius Gavin in the quarterfinals, Da Silva and Guevel dropped only one game, winning 4-0, 4-1.
The pairing then advanced past Bucknell's Max Garramone and Pedrazzini, 5-4 (7), 1-4, 1-0 (10), to reach the finals.
However, Da Silva and Guevel could not best another pair of Bison in the finals, falling to Vituic and McDonald, 1-4, 4-1, 1-0 (10).
Norfolk State men's tennis concludes the fall portion of its schedule with the third 757 UTR Showdown on Sunday, Nov. 4.
