Barnes, Girma Post Wins as NSU Places 4th at MEAC Indoor

LANDOVER, Md. – Freshman Trequan Barnes and junior Anteneh Girma secured gold medals in the 400 and 3,000-meter races, respectively, to lead the Norfolk State men's track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the MEAC Indoor Championship on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The Spartans finished the meet with 68.5 points. North Carolina A&T (144) points repeated as MEAC indoor men's champion.

Barnes captured the first MEAC individual title of his career with a strong performance in the 400 meters. He posted a time of 47.69 seconds, his second-fastest time of the season, to outclass the competition. Barnes also placed seventh in the 200 meters (22.01) and teamed with Jaylen Banks, Justin Pinder and Phil Griggs Jr. to earn fourth place in the 4x400 relay (3:17.32).

Girma won his second gold medal of the meet Saturday. Two days after winning the 5,000 meters, Girma won the 3,000 on the final day of competition. Girma remained at the front of the pack for the majority of the race and pulled away down the stretch to post a winning time of 8 minutes, 52.13 seconds.

Girma was one of three Spartans to score in the 3,000. Felix Kiprotich placed fifth (8:58.07) and Tomas Fantaye finished seventh (9:00.71). Kiprotich was also eighth in the mile (4:24.40).

Also scoring points for NSU on Saturday was freshman Patrick Booker in the pole vault. Booker tied for sixth place with a season-best height of 13 feet, 0.25 inches.
