Villanova Takes Doubleheader from NSU, Completes Weekend Sweep

NORFOLK, Va. – Villanova recorded 13 hits in each game and got solid starting pitching from its two starters to take a doubleheader from Norfolk State, 11-3 and 14-1, to complete a three-game weekend sweep of the Spartans at Marty L. Miller Field.

Villanova's David Gulati had four hits, including a home run, and five runs batted in to lead the Wildcats. Justin Burrell homered in game one for the Spartans (0-3). NSU starting pitchers Jonathan Mahoney and Trey Hanchey – both starting for the first time at NSU – recorded seven strikeouts apiece in the doubleheader.

Game 1: Villanova 11, NSU 3
In the opener, Villanova outhit the Spartans 13-4 and took advantage of seven Spartan miscues. The Wildcats took control with a three-run second, which included a pair of runs that scored on an error, and led 4-0 after adding another unearned run in the fourth. The Spartans got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Burrell blasted a solo home run down the left-field line. It was his second career homer and NSU's first round-tripper of the season.

But the Wildcats scored four more in the fifth to break the game open, thanks in part to a two-run single by Gulati.

The Spartans scored their remaining runs in the fifth. Jaran Davis notched his first collegiate hit, a two-out RBI single to score Syeed Mahdi, who singled earlier in the inning. Tony Leite then doubled deep into the left-field corner to score Davis.

The Wildcats tacked on three more insurance runs in the eighth, two on John Heilenbach's double.

Gulati went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI in the opener. Four different Spartans had one hit apiece.

Mahoney took the loss for NSU, allowing eight runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings. He struck out seven batters. Mike Sgaramella got the win for Villanova, allowing three runs in five innings.

Game 2: Villanova 14, NSU 1
In the nightcap, Villanova's Ryan Doty outdueled Spartan starter Hanchey. Hanchey struck out seven batters and allowed just three hits and three runs (two earned) in five innings, but Doty fared better. He did not allow a hit until the sixth, and struck out 10 over six innings of work.

The Wildcats scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings against Hanchey. John Heilenbach hit an RBI single in the first, J.P. Radvany a fielder's choice in the third and Gulati hit a solo homer in the fifth. Hanchey kept NSU in the game by allowing just three hits in his five innings.

The Wildcats led 5-0 in the sixth before NSU's offense came to life. Johnny Mayer had the Spartans' first hit, a one-out single in the sixth. Mayer stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Justin Hayes.

But the Wildcats scored nine runs over the final three innings against the NSU bullpen to pull away.

Doty allowed just two hits and one run, walked one and struck out 10.

The Spartans host a four-team round-robin event with Sacred Heart, Iona and Stony Brook next weekend. NSU's next contest is a 1 p.m. game Friday against Sacred Heart.
