MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Norfolk State softball team managed just one run on Saturday evening, falling in a pair of games during the Holy City Showdown at Patriot's Point Sports Complex.
Winthrop earned a 6-1 victory over the Spartans in a contest that started in the late afternoon. NSU followed that up with a 7-0 loss to Furman during the second day of the tournament.
Sabrina Shroades gave up six hits and just one earned run with six strikeouts to lead Winthrop (9-7) to the win. Furman's Lindsey Bert, meanwhile, struck out 12 Spartans in a complete game effort for the Paladins (19-6).
NSU fell to 9-16 overall.
Three of the runs for Winthrop came in the sixth to give them some breathing room. The first run scored on a double steal, and a pair of RBI hits made it the final five-run margin.
The Eagles also scored twice in the second, the first thank to an error on NSU and then the second on an RBI groundout. The Spartans scored their lone run in the second as freshman
Jazzmaine Hammond hit a bunt single and came home on freshman
Tuli Iosefa's double to left.
The Eagles also added another run in the fourth before pushing even further ahead in the sixth.
Iosefa had a pair of hits in two at bats, while Keleigh Romine batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Winthrop. NSU finished with six hits in the game.
Later in the day, Bert (12-4) gave up five hits and did not walk a batter in addition to her 12 K's for Furman.
The Paladins did most of their damage in the first, scoring four runs. The first two came on RBI doubles, and another RBI hit followed by an NSU error gave them the early lead. Furman also scored a single run in the second and then single runs in the third and fourth on solo homers for the final margin.
Junior
Hunter Halford had two of NSU's five hits in the game.
The top three batters in the lineup for Furman, Lauren Duggar, Caroline Cash and Candace Johnson, finished a combined 7-for-12 with four runs scored.
Spartan freshman
Kayla Porter limited the Paladins to three hits and one earned run in the final three innings.
NSU closes out the tournament on Sunday against Charleston Southern at 2:30 p.m.
