Spartan Baseball Back on Road for Series at MDES

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team returns to the road for another three-game MEAC Northern Division series this weekend when the Spartans meet Maryland Eastern Shore for a three-game series in Salisbury, Md.

Due to renovations to the Hawks' on-campus facility, the games will be played at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, home of the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds, which has also been the site of the last three MEAC tournaments.

The Spartans (5-13, 3-0 MEAC North) enter the weekend having won three straight and five of their last seven following last weekend's three-game sweep of Delaware State in Dover, Del. NSU swept its first divisional series of the season by scores of 10-2, 6-1 and 14-6.

NSU was led at the plate by MEAC Rookie of the Week Aaron Robinson (.500, homer, five RBIs) and MEAC Co-Player of the Week Stephen Baughan (.429, homer, six RBIs). Alsander Womack added five hits and five runs scored over the weekend, Justin Hayes also scored five times and Syeed Mahdi hit a two-run homer in the series finale to buoy an offense which rapped out 35 hits in the series.

Entering this weekend, the Spartans have three of the MEAC's top five hitters in Hayes (second, .370), Robinson (third, .365) and Womack (fifth, .348). Robinson (.519) and Womack (.515) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the conference in slugging.

The Hawks (2-18, 1-2) enter the weekend on a three-game slide after dropping a pair of mid-week games in Durham, N.C., by scores of 18-5 at North Carolina Central and 9-5 at No. 21 Duke. Third baseman Joey Nicastro leads the Hawk regulars with 10 runs batted in and also hits .270.

MDES played a pair of one-run games last weekend in its first MEAC series of the year with Coppin State. After dropping the opener 12-2, the Hawks rebounded to win the second game 1-0 behind MEAC Pitcher of the Week Evan Bertone. The right hander tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out four batters in the win. The Hawks dropped the series finale 5-4 in 11 innings.

Live stats for all three games will be available through the Hawks web site, www.easternshorehawks.com, and are linked through the NSU schedule page, as well.
