SALISBURY, Md. – Maryland Eastern shore rallied from a 6-2 deficit and won 7-6 after Avery Tunnell's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday to prevent Norfolk State from sweeping the three-game weekend series between the teams at Perdue Stadium.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Spartans (7-14, 5-1 MEAC North), who still took two of three in the series against the Hawks (3-20, 2-4).
NSU scored three runs in the second and three more in the fifth to surge ahead 6-2 at the halfway point.
Alejandro Pelaez's RBI single ignited the second-inning rally.
Syeed Mahdi's sacrifice fly and
Alsander Womack's two-out RBI double gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks got single runs back in the second and third innings before NSU extended its lead in the fifth.
Aaron Robinson and
Tony Leite led off the frame with back-to-back singles before
Justin Burrell made it three in a row by singling in Robinson. Leite scored on a passed ball and
Ismael Herrera's second squeeze bunt in as many days plated Burrell to put the Spartans in front, 6-2.
But the Hawks slowly rallied. Jamison Trower knocked in a run with a sac fly in the fifth. MDES then plated two two-out runs in the sixth, one on a Tyler Friis RBI single and another when Jordan Torres and Friis executed a double steal. Then in the seventh, Trower scored on a two-out NSU error to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Hawks got three straight one-out singles to win the game. Dwayne Marshall led off with an infield single, went to second on Dominic DeBlaise's single and scored on Tunnell's single through the middle of the diamond.
Chris Melrath earned the win for the Hawks with four scoreless innings of relief. He allowed two hits and struck out three.
Joey Santos took the loss for the Spartans, allowing four hits and a run in 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Burrell went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base to lead the Spartans offensively. Herrera went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Eight different players had at least one hit for NSU, which was outhit 14-11.
Torres and Marshall had three hits each, while Tunnell, Trower and Blake Coleman had two each for the Hawks.
NSU returns home for its next seven games, beginning with a 3 p.m. non-conference game against North Carolina Central on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
