Spartans Open MEAC Tournament Monday Night vs. MDES

NORFOLK, Va. - The quest toward a MEAC title starts on Monday night when the No. 5 seed Norfolk State men's basketball team takes on No. 12 seed Maryland Eastern Shore at 9 p.m. in the tournament first round at Norfolk Scope Arena.

NSU ended the regular season tied for fourth in the MEAC standings at 11-5 as well as 13-18 overall. The Hawks went 3-13 in the league as part of a 7-24 overall campaign. The winner advances to the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 8 p.m. against the winner of the No. 4 seed North Carolina A&T-No. 13 seed Delaware State first round game.

Series History
The Spartans have a commanding lead in the all-time series, 45-17, having won 10 of the last 11. They have met three times in the MEAC tournament, with the Spartans winning all three games. The last time came in the 2014 tournament, a 78-74 NSU win. The Hawks won the first five meetings and seven of the first eight in the series, which began in 1953-54. The Spartans once won 15 in a row over MDES from the 2001-02 season into the 2008-09 campaign.

Scouting Maryland Eastern Shore
The Hawks are coming off a 12-point win over Delaware State last Monday to give them their third MEAC win of the season. In fact, all seven of their wins have come either at home or on a neutral site court. They own a 0-18 true road record this season. Four players do score in double figures, with Tyler Jones first up with 12.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Logan McIntosh (11.9 points, 4.6 assists), Miryne Thomas (11.1 points, 7.6 rebounds) and Ahmad Frost (10.9 points) also reach double figures, although the Hawks do score just 62 points per game while giving up 77. In fact, they only shoot 38 percent overall and 28 percent from deep. Opponents hold the rebounding edge by an average of 6.2 boards and also turn it over only 11 times per game against MDES. Opponents also hit 47 percent overall and 36 percent from deep against the Hawks.

Last Time Out
Hampton scored the last eight points of the game after the Spartans had taken their first lead all night, as NSU did not score in the last three and a half minutes in a 74-71 loss to Hampton in the Battle of the Bay on Thursday. The Pirates clinched a share of the MEAC regular season title after leading the entire first half and the first 13 and a half minutes of the second half. The Spartans used a 16-6 run to go up by five with 3:37 left before Hampton rallied for the win. Steven Whitley totaled 27 points on 12-of-16 shooting with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Mastadi Pitt was the only other Spartan in double figures with 10. Kalin Fisher shot 10-of-17 for 23 points with eight rebounds to lead Hampton, which swept the season series from NSU for the first time since 2013-14. The Pirates shot 47 percent overall compared to 42 percent for the Spartans.

Conference Standings
NSU has finished fourth or better in the MEAC in 11 of the last 12 seasons.

MEAC Tournament History
Last year marked the third time ever NSU advanced to the MEAC Championship game. The Spartans lost as the No. 3 seed in 2009 to top seed Morgan State and as the No. 2 seed in 2017 to top seed North Carolina Central. The Spartans also won it all in 2012 as a No. 2 seed before going on to defeat No. 2 seed Missouri in the NCAA Tournament.

NSU has been to the semifinals of the MEAC tournament eight times in the last 10 seasons. The Spartans have been a No. 4 seed or better in nine of the last 11 years. This season marks the first time in seven years the Spartans were not at least a No. 4 seed.

All-Conference
Last year, for the ninth time in 10 seasons, NSU had a first-team all-conference player. In 2017, it was guard Jonathan Wade. This year marks the first time in 15 years the Spartans did not have  at least one all-conference player.
