NORFOLK, Va. – Host Old Dominion took advantage of four Norfolk State errors in a 9-1 non-conference win on Tuesday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
The game was called after seven innings due to a power outage and darkness.
The Spartans (0-10) outhit ODU (5-7) for much of the game, but ODU pulled away from a 1-1 tie by scoring two runs in the sixth and six more in the seventh to win the teams' first meeting since 2016.
Norfolk State broke on top with a run in the top of the first. ODU transfer outfielder
Justin Hayes and freshman second baseman
Alsander Womack led off the game with back-to-back singles for the Spartans off ODU starter Hunter Gregory.
Stephen Baughan then drew a walk from Gregory to load the bases before
Aaron Robinson's sac fly scored Hayes from third.
ODU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly by Culver Lamb that scored Kyle Battle, who reached on an error earlier in the frame.
The pitchers matched scoreless innings for the next four frames, with NSU freshman
Seth Hockett giving way to sophomore lefty
Tyler Morgan in the third. Hockett allowed just the one unearned run in two innings in his first career start, and Morgan pitched three scoreless frames to keep the game tied until the sixth.
But ODU's Erik Stock (2-for-4) hit a two-run double with one out in the sixth to break the stalemate, giving the Monarchs a 3-1 edge and their first runs off Morgan.
NSU threatened in the seventh inning, as both third baseman
Alejandro Pelaez and catcher
Ismael Herrera reached on one-out singles. But ODU reliever Isaiah Nelson retired the next two Spartans in order to keep NSU off the board.
The Monarchs then broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the seventh, which included two NSU errors and a three-run double by Battle. Battle scored at the end of his double on the final Spartan misplay of the frame.
Gregory (1-0) earned the win. He allowed just the one first-inning run in his six innings of work, striking out seven and allowing six hits. Morgan (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs, five earned, in 4.2 innings pitched.
Pelaez and Hayes each finished 2-for-3 for NSU, with Pelaez's two singles representing the first two hits of his collegiate career. Robinson went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
ODU had six of its nine hits in the seventh and final frame, while NSU finished with eight hits in the game.
The Spartans will play at VCU on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
