NORFOLK, Va. - The quarterfinal round will feature a rematch of two teams whose first meeting this year came down to the wire. On Thursday night, No. 5 seed Norfolk State takes on No. 4 seed North Carolina A&T at 8 p.m. in the MEAC tournament at Scope Arena.
The two teams tied in the regular season standings at 11-5. The Aggies own a 19-13 overall record. NSU, winners of 10 of its last 12, comes in at 14-18. The winner advances to the semifinal round on Friday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the No. 1 seed Hampton-No. 9 seed Florida A&M quarterfinal game.

Series History
The Spartans had won six in a row over the Aggies before North Carolina A&T came away with a 71-68 win back on Jan. 18 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The series is now 25-21 in favor of NSU, the closest rivalry for the Spartans among all MEAC schools. The teams have met three times in the MEAC Tournament, with NSU winning two of those three matchups in 2003 and '04. The Aggies won the most recent meeting in the tournament in 2007.
Scouting North Carolina A&T
The Aggies needed overtime to survive No. 13 seed Delaware State on Monday night, 62-61. They are a team averaging 75.5 points per game and shooting 46 percent from the floor. Femi Olujobi (16.4 points, 7.6 rebounds) and Davaris McGowens (11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds) were each named All-MEAC this year. Devonte Boykins (9.4 points, 55 3-pointers), Denzel Keyes (9.3 points, 5.1 rebounds) and Aaren Edmead (9.1 points) also help in the scoring department. Kameron Langley directs the offense to the tune of 5.0 assists with 7.1 points. Opponents also make close to 46 percent overall against an Aggie team that won just three games a year ago.
Last Time Out
Norfolk State led for the entire way against No. 12 seed Maryland Eastern Shore, and the Spartans opened the MEAC tournament with a 78-68 win over the Hawks on Monday night. In a contest that did not tip until almost 10 p.m., NSU had five players score between 12 and 16 points.
Steven Whitley led the way with 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals. The Spartans made 49 percent overall, including 11-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Hawks shot 50 percent in the second half, as the teams deadlocked at 41-all after halftime. The Spartans led by 10 at the break. MEAC Tournament History
Last year marked the third time ever NSU advanced to the MEAC Championship game. The Spartans lost as the No. 3 seed in 2009 to top seed Morgan State and as the No. 2 seed in 2017 to top seed North Carolina Central. The Spartans also won it all in 2012 as a No. 2 seed before going on to defeat No. 2 seed Missouri in the NCAA Tournament.
NSU has been to the semifinals of the MEAC tournament eight times in the last 10 seasons. The Spartans have been a No. 4 seed or better in nine of the last 11 years. This season marks the first time in seven years the Spartans were not at least a No. 4 seed.

NSU has a winning record against every school in the MEAC, with several of those series covering a lot of ground in the Division II era. The Spartans' closest rival over the years has been North Carolina A&T (25-21).

 • Over the past 15 games, Norfolk State is shooting 45.3 percent overall and 37.7 percent from 3-point range, averaging 77.5 points per game. In the last 14 games, the opposition has shot 38.1 percent overall and 30.6 from deep.
