CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's track and field team recorded five first-place finishes in a strong showing over the weekend at the Charlotte Invitational.
Freshman
Kiara Grant (100 meters), juniors
Tyrika Lee (200m) and
Taejah Robertson (100m hurdles), sophomore
Martha Bissah (800m) and the 4x100 relay team all won their respective events.Â
Grant, in her first 100 of the spring, posted a PR of 11.61 seconds, the sixth-fastest time in the MEAC this outdoor season. Lee also ran well in the 100m, taking third in 11.83. Lee than went on to PR in the 200 meters, clocking a winning time of 24.17 seconds.Â
Robertson, in her first 100-meter hurdles race of the season, posted a time of 13.60 seconds to take gold in the event. That's good enough for a fourth-place ranking in the MEAC this spring.
Like Robertson, Bissah also opened up in her best event at Charlotte, running a collegiate-best 800m time of 2 minutes, 5.51 seconds. That's the best time in the MEAC this spring and ranks 11th-best in the NCAA East Region during outdoor season.
Candice Higgins also PRed in the 800, placing third in 2:12.47.
NSU's final win came in the 4x100 relay, where the team of Grant, Robertson, Lee and
T'Nai Wells posted a first-place time of 46.53 seconds. They rank No. 6 in the MEAC with that performance.
Rounding out a successful weekend in the sprints, the Spartans also took second and fourth in the 400 meters. Freshman
Malika Pride was runner-up in a season-best time of 55.56 seconds, and Bissah was fourth in a personal record of 56.39 seconds.
In the multis, junior
Kellyann James finished fourth in the heptathlon with 4,389 points. She placed second in the 100 hurdles, shot put and long jump heptathlon events.
The Spartans return to action this weekend at the Virginia State Trojan Invite in Ettrick, Va.
