Bissah Wins 1,500 Meters at Fred Hardy Invite

Meet Results

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Martha Bissah opened up her outdoor track and field season in style with a victory in the 1,500 meters over the weekend at the Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond.

After sitting out last weekend's meet at the University of South Carolina, Bissah registered a time of 4 minutes, 27.46 seconds, just .34 off her personal best. Still, the time was easily good enough for the top spot so far this season among MEAC 1,500m runners.

Candice Higgins also ran well in the 1,500, placing seventh in 4:41.08. That's the fastest 1,500m time she's run as a Spartan and ranks third in the MEAC this season to date. Higgins also came in fourth in the 400 meters, in 59.34 seconds.

Other top-five finishes on the track were turned in by Tyrika Lee (third, 24.75) and Malika Pride (fourth, 24.95) in the 200 meters and Kellyann James (fourth, 1517) and Ayana Dozier (fifth, 15.53) in the 100-meter hurdles. The 4x400 meter relay squad consisting of Pride, Lee, Bissah and Chazmin Fullwood capped the Spartans' weekend on the track with a runner-up finish. The group ran a season-best time of 3:47.43, fifth-fastest in the MEAC so far this outdoor season.

In the field events, Spartans get a second-place finish from freshman Takiyah Lewis in the hammer throw (134 feet, 5 inches) and a third-place effort from Dozier in the triple jump (37-6.75).

The Spartans are back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.
