ETTRICK, Va. – Tyrika Lee and
Taejah Robertson both had a hand in two first-place finishes, and
Martha Bissah lowered her MEAC-leading 1,500-meter time as the Spartan women's track and field team competed at the Virginia State Trojan Invitational on Saturday.
Both Lee and Robertson won an individual event and took part on the winning 4x100 meter relay team for the Spartans. Lee won the 200 meters in 24.44 seconds, and Robertson cruised to the win in the 100 hurdles in 14.34 seconds. Those two, along with freshman
Kiara Grant and sophomore
T'Nai Wells, also won the 4x100 in 46.58 seconds. That ranks as NSU's second-fastest 4x100 time of the outdoor season.
In what was a strong showing for NSU in the sprints and hurdles, Grant (11.93) had the fastest 100m preliminary time, but did not run in the finals.
Malika Pride (fourth) and Grant (fifth) also placed in the top five in the 200 meters, while Wells,
Kellyann James and
Ashaila Bunch took third through fifth places, respectively, in the 100 hurdles.
Bissah, meanwhile, claimed her second 1,500m win of outdoor season with her PR of 4 minutes, 25.89 seconds. Teammate
Candice Higgins also fared well in the 1,500, placing second behind Bissah in 4:42.02.
Elsewhere on the track, sophomore Carolina Samoei won the 3,000 meters (11:08.31) and sophomore
De'Shonde McCray was fifth in the 800 (2:41.00).
The Spartans posted four top-five finishes in field events.
Brianna Hayes claimed fourth in the high jump (5 feet, 1 inch), James placed fourth in the javelin (100-6), Bunch came in fifth in the triple jump (35-8.75) and
Daiysa Burrell took fifth in the discus (124-2).
The Spartans compete this Saturday at the Virginia Grand Prix in Charlottesville, their final meet before the MEAC Outdoor Championships the following weekend.
