CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Martha Bissah broke her four-year old personal record in the 800 meters, running one of the 11 fastest times in the nation this year for the Spartan women's track and field team at the University of Virginia Grand Prix on Saturday night.
Bissah cruised to the win in 2 minutes, 4.32 seconds, beating her season-best time from the Charlotte Invitational (2:05.51) two weeks prior by more than a second. More impressively, she topped her 2:04.90 that she posted in winning the gold medal at the World Youth Olympics in China in 2014. Bissah's time ranks as the seventh-fastest in the NCAA East Region and is No. 11 in the nation this outdoor season.
Senior Candice Higgins also posted a PR in the 800 on Saturday. She ran a time of 2:10.38, which placed third in the event.
The Spartans' other event win Saturday came via the 4x100 relay team. The quartet of Taejah Robertson, Tyrika Lee, T'Nai Wells and Kiara Grant ran a season-best time of 45.84 seconds to win the relay. The time ranks as the fourth-best in the MEAC this season.
Other top-five finishes on the track were turned in by Robertson in the 100-meter hurdles (third, season-best 13.55 seconds), Grant in the 100 meters (fourth, 11.78) and Malika Pride in the 200 (fifth, 24.48).
In field events, Daiysa Burrell recorded a personal-best throw of 139 feet, 4.75 inches in the discus, good for ninth place at U.Va. and a No. 6 ranking the MEAC this season.
The Spartans compete at the MEAC Outdoor Championships Thursday through Saturday on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
