JACKSON, Miss. – Lamar Briggs tallied three hits and both Dezmond Chumley and Rahman Williams hit solo home runs to lift Jackson State to an 8-4 win over Norfolk State on Friday afternoon at Bob Braddy Field.
Mikey Delgado had three hits, matching his career high, in the regular-season finale for the Spartans (18-28). JSU ends its regular season at 32-16.
Raul Hernandez hit an RBI single and Wesley Reyes an RBI double as JSU took a 2-0 lead in the first. Williams hit his solo homer to lead off the second and Briggs doubled in another run in the frame to extend the Tigers' lead to 4-0.
NSU scored four unanswered runs to tie the game. Delgado singled and scored on a
Khie Simms double in the third. In the fourth,
Tony Leite led off with a single and scored on a JSU error. The Spartans then knotted the score thanks to run-scoring singles off the bat of
Justin Hayes and
Alsander Womack in the fifth.
But Chumley's solo homer in the bottom of the fifth put the Tigers into the lead for good. Jesus Santana tacked on an RBI single later in the fifth before Briggs doubled in another run in the sixth. Jarvis Warner capped the scoring with an RBI double in the eighth.
Kevin Perez (11-4) allowed four runs in six innings to pick up the win for the Tigers.
Stephen Baughan started on the mound for the first time this year and allowed two runs in one inning to take the loss.
Delgado finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored for NSU. Also in the loss, Spartan catcher
Ismael Herrera threw out two more base runners in three attempts Friday. He leads the nation with 29 runners caught stealing this season.
The Spartans now await word of their first-round opponent in next week's six-team MEAC Baseball Championship. NSU, the No. 2 seed from the MEAC North, will play the yet-to-be determined No. 3 seed from the MEAC South in next Wednesday's opening round in Daytona Beach, Fla.
