NORFOLK, Va. – Vini Da Silva took home championship honors after winning Flight A of the CNU Invite over the weekend at the Eyre Courts in Newport News, Virginia.
Da Silva did not drop a set in his march to the championship match. In the quarterfinals, the junior from Aracaju, Brazil bested Chowan's Edmond Aynedjian, 6-3, 6-1, to reach the semifinals. From there, Da Silva swept Davy van Geerke of Hampton, 6-3, 6-2.
An all-NSU final with
Andres Alcaraz awaited Da Silva, with Alcaraz defaulting to give the flight championship to Da Silva.
Much like his teammate, Alcaraz road a pair of straight-sets victories to the flight championship. The junior dispatched Andy Mason of Christopher Newport, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals before defeating Chowan's Adi Kaliakperov, 6-1, 6-0.
Flavian Fernandez picked up a pair of victories in the consolation bracket of Flight B. Fernandez dropped to the consolation bracket after falling, 6-4, 6-2, to CNU's Ryan Macy. The senior defeated Charles Hudson of Hampton, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 in his first consolation match before earning a default victory over teammate
Dan Dumitrascu.
Dumitrascu reached the consolation bracket after a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Mariano Yeh of Chowan. The Bistrita, Romania native won by default in his first consolation match before his meeting with Fernandez.
Ignacio Guevel finished as runner-up in Flight C. The Santiago del Estero, Argentina native advanced past Paul Baron of CNU, 6-3, 6-1, in his first match of the tournament. Guevel then defeated CNU's Mitch Brody, 6-2, 6-2. The junior then fell in straight sets to Mason Kolls of CNU, 6-1, 6-2, in the Flight C championship match.
In doubles competition, Da Silva and Guevel picked up a pair of victories in Flight A, defeating Aynedjan and Yeh of Chowan, 8-4, and CNU's Nicholas Ruzicka and William Trang, 8-3.
Also in Flight A, Fernandez paired with van Geerke to run the table. The duo defeated Ruzicka and Trang, 9-8 (11-9), Aynedjan and Yeh, 8-5, and Da Silva and Guevel, 8-6.
The men's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 14 with the 757 UTR Showdown in Norfolk, Va.
