NORFOLK, Va. - The Spartans are looking to remain perfect in MEAC play halfway through the conference season when they travel on the road this weekend. The Norfolk State men's basketball team will play at Howard on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
For the second week in a row, the Spartans will not play on Monday night as part of the MEAC's Saturday-Monday schedule. Instead, they will look to improve to 8-0 in conference play with the Saturday contest against the Bison. NSU currently leads North Carolina A&T (6-0) by a half game, with North Carolina Central and Florida A&M at 5-2.

Series History
NSU has held a big edge over the Bison in recent years, winning the last five games as well as 15 of the previous 16 contests. The Spartans won the most recent meeting last year, 79-74 up in Washington, D.C. That moved NSU's all-time record to 44-10 against the Bison, including 32-7 since moving to Division I in 1997.
Scouting Howard
The Bison currently sit fifth in the MEAC standings at 4-3, having won their past three conference games after a 1-3 start. All three of those losses came at home, as the Bison have played five of their first seven conference games at Burr Gymnasium. They stand 10-12 overall.
The Bison bring the MEAC's highest scoring offense into the weekend, averaging 79 points per game while giving up 78. Howard shoots 43 percent overall and 33 percent from deep, but the Bison average 23.5 free throw attempts each time out. RJ Cole is a big reason, hitting 132-of-163 (81 percent) from the free throw line. He averages 20.4 points and 6.4 assists per game and leads the league in scoring.
Charles Williams is second in the conference at 19.0 points per game, while he and Cole have combined for 88 3-pointers. Chad Lott tallies 15.1 points while shooting 49 percent overall, but no other player averages 6 points. Zion Cousins is the top rebounder at 8.0 boards per game. HU is +2.2 in turnover margin, giving the ball away just 12.5 times per contest.
Last Time Out
NSU made a school record 18 3-pointers and shot a season-best 55 percent from the floor in an 88-60 win over Maryland Eastern Shore last Saturday at home. The Spartans led by 21 at the break and weathered a Hawk comeback attempt that saw MDES get to within 13 with 12 minutes left in the game.
The Spartans had just three players reach double figures, including
Nic Thomas with a career-high 26 points. He made 7-of-11 from deep and 8-of-13 overall.
Mastadi Pitt contributed 18 points, knocking down 4-of-5 from the 3-point line as well.
Derrik Jamerson Jr. made all four of his shots from beyond the arc and tallied 16 points with five rebounds. NSU was 18-of-27 from deep for the evening.
Maryland Eastern Shore made 56 percent in the second half and 44 percent overall. Ryan Andino totaled 19 points, and Canaan Bartley added 15 points and six rebounds. The Hawks outscored NSU 28-18 in points in the paint, while NSU held the edge in fastbreak points, 15-4.
Season Trends
 • NSU's 18 3-pointers against Maryland Eastern Shore broke the old school record of 14, set four different times in the last several year. The Spartans also connected on 66.7 percent from beyond the arc, topping the previous Division I best of 64.3 percent (9-of-14) set against Howard in 2012 and against Bethune-Cookman in 2006.
 • The Spartans are currently hitting 37.9 percent from deep, a pace that would top the Division I record of 35.9 percent set last year. At 73.8 points per game, NSU is on pace for its highest scoring average since the 1999-2000 season.
