NORFOLK, Va. – George Washington sent the Norfolk State volleyball team to a loss in its final non-conference match of the season, 3-0 on Monday night at Gill Gymnasium.
The Colonials, who had defeated NSU earlier this year on a neutral court, won this time via scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-19. GWU improved to 12-9 while holding NSU to an even .000 attack percentage.
The Spartans dropped to 1-16 overall on the season. They were led by junior
Julisa Carrizosa with eight kills and nine digs, and senior
Anna Rupertova with five kills.
GWU got 12 kills on a .276 attack percentage from Skylar Iott. NSU did limit the Colonials to a .126 hitting percentage.
Each set, the Spartans were able to close the gap in the late stages. Of course, they led 7-6 early in the first set after falling behind by a 5-2 score. Carrizosa had four of her kills during the set, but the Colonials turned that one-point deficit into a 16-11 edge. They were up 19-13 before they gave up four of the next five points. But after Carrizosa's last kill of the set made it 20-17, GWU scored the last five points.
The Spartans scored four in a row in the second set, which came after they fell behind by a 9-3 margin. The Colonials scored nine in a row to push the lead to 18-7. The Spartans called their last timeout down 21-9, but Rupertova had a pair of kills and sophomore
Makenzy Johnson had back-to-back aces. The last one ended a 7-1 run.
GWU still led 22-16 at that point and secured the last three points for the 2-0 lead in the match.
NSU faced deficits of 5-2, 11-5 and later 15-8 in the third. Senior
Bojana Bolozan had a block, a kill and later an ace as NSU closed the gap to 19-16. The Colonials went back up by seven and finally finished the set on one last kill by Iott.
Bolozan and junior
Jannel Ezeagwu each had three blocks for the Spartans.
Caroline Sklaver added five kills, six digs and six blocks for GWU. Jaimeson Lee went for 21 assists, seven digs, four blocks and three kills, and Bella Bowman added a match-high 16 digs and four aces.
The Spartans will host MEAC Southern Division leader North Carolina A&T on Friday at 6 p.m. as they close out the season with eight straight conference games.
