NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State reaped the rewards of its best performance of the season, as four Spartans were recognized Monday in the five MEAC weekly football awards categories for their efforts in Saturday's win over Morgan State.
Junior quarterback
Juwan Carter was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week and senior safety
Nhyre' Quinerly was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week. Additionally, freshman cornerback
Devyn Coles was named Rookie of the Week and junior
Jalen Powell was selected Offensive Lineman of the Week.
Carter picked up his third MEAC Offensive Player of the Week honor of the year Monday. He completed 16-of-28 passes for 314 yards and accounted for four touchdowns in Saturday's 48-0 defeat of the Bears. Carter threw three touchdown passes and ran for another while amassing 340 yards of total offense.
Quinerly logged nine tackles, one pass breakup and returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown Saturday against the Bears. The interception was NSU's fifth of the day and helped NSU finish off its first shutout since 2012. The Spartans limited MSU to just 153 yards of total offense.
Coles was another key defensive standout Saturday. He added two more interceptions in the game, bringing his team-leading total this year to four. Coles also made four tackles, one of them being a tackle for loss of the Bears' holder on a failed field goal attempt.
Powell helped pave the way for the Spartans to finish with 529 total yards, their second-best output of the season. NSU's starting left guard, Powell graded out at 95 percent on his assignments and had four knockdown blocks. Thanks in part to Powell and his line mates, NSU ran for 215 yards, the second time in the last three games that the team has rushed for at least 200.
The four weekly honors are the most in one week for NSU since 2017. These are also the first MEAC weekly awards in the careers of Coles and Powell, the second for Quinerly and the seventh for Carter.
The Spartans are on the road this Saturday for a 2 p.m. game at North Carolina Central.
