Series History
NSU has never played Penn State Wilkes-Barre, a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II.
Scouting Penn State Wilkes-Barre
The Mountain Lions are coming off a 2018-19 season that saw them win the USCAA National Championship, the first in both program and Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) history. It earned head coach LeShawn Hammett the USCAA National Coach of the Year Award.
Khalil White was named a USCAA All-American in helping the Mountain Lions to a 25-5 overall record. He wasted little time in beginning a repeat performance, going for 29 points, seven rebounds and nine assists in the team's 86-78 victory over Luzerne County CC on Tuesday to start its season.
Ray Pender had 20 points as Penn State Wilkes-Barre looks to replace its two other double-digit scorers from a season go, aside from White. Another newcomer, Clifton Tracey, scored 14 points in Tuesday's win.
Last Time Out
Norfolk State reached the century mark on the scoreboard, scoring exactly that in a 100-59 win over Greensboro College on Tuesday night at Echols Hall. All 13 active players saw time on the court, at least 10 minutes for all but one. Four of them scored in double figures as the Spartans shot 44 percent from the field.
Freshman
Yoro Sidibe led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Steven Whitley added 16 points with six rebounds and three assists. The team also got 11 points each from
Jermaine Bishop and
Devante Carter.
NSU held Greensboro College to 35 percent shooting, and the Spartans had a huge edge on the glass, 57-34. They also enjoyed big advantages in points in the paint (40-30), points off turnovers (31-14), second-chance points (14-6), and fastbreak points (22-10).
Cleaning Out the Notebook
NSU shot 35-of-79 against Greensboro College, which included 12 3-pointers on 31 attempts. The latter three (field goal attempts, 3-pointers, 3-point attempts) all rank in the top 10 for the most in a single game in NSU's Division I history. The team's 57 rebounds are tied for the fourth-most in D-I records as well.
The Spartans reached the 100-point plateau for the third season in a row.
Early Start
This year's start date of Nov. 5 marked the earliest start to the season ever for NSU. Prior to this year, the Spartans' earliest start date was Nov. 6 last year and Nov. 9 in both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
This was just the second time in the past 16 years NSU began its season at home, and the first time starting off with back-to-back games at home since 2002-03. It was also the first time in five years the Spartans did not open their season at a Power 5 opponent following games at South Carolina (2015), Mississippi State (2016), Auburn (2017), and Michigan (2018).
Lost Production
Of NSU's top eight scorers from a season ago, only one is back, that being senior guard
Steven Whitley. Of the other seven, four players were seniors, and three transferred. Altogether, the Spartans lost 79.7 percent of their scoring from a season ago, while 60 percent of the scoring that is back is from Whitley.
Of the team's 15 players on the roster, 10 are newbies this year and 11 have never put on a uniform for the Spartans (senior
Jermaine Bishop sat out last year at NSU).
Who Are You?
In fact, NSU's 10 newcomers are some of the most of any team in the nation. In information compiled by Utah's sports information staff, only 13 teams in the country have more newcomers than NSU.
